“Art for art's sake is an empty phrase. Art for the sake of truth, art for the sake of the good and the beautiful, that is the faith I am searching for.” —George Sand
Here's a recollection of books I've read and loved. Meaningful, thought-provoking, or at least quite entertaining, food for the mind.
I mean. What can I say. More than a book I recommend reading, it's a book I urge you to act on. When we live things out is when we prove whether they work or not. Truth will prevail. I've heard Jews say the Bible is like a diamond. Turn it and turn it, and keep turning it, you will find everything is in it.
Twelve Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos
Easy to read, incredibly insightful. If you're into psychology, human behaviour or history you'll have a blast reading this.
The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion
A book about the psychological reasons for people's tendencies to fall closer to the right or left in the political spectrum. It makes you think about the reasons "good" people can so easily talk over each other's points and think SO differently. Great book, easy to read.
The Screwtape Letters
Rather fun to read. Entertaining, good for youth. You'll glide through it, you'll be immersed in the story. It makes you think about important issues from the human experience, our pleasures, and the numbness we all take part in when we slowly (but steadily) fall prey to hedonism.
Gödel, Escher and Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
Wow! Very insightful. You will learn about consciousness and patterns of reality through music, visual arts and math! Still reading.
Art and The Bible
Schaeffer explains through different forms of art in the Bible, the role of artists in the world and how to praise God through your craft. Very helpful for me in understanding a biblical perspective of what I do.
Story of Art
Amazing classic by Ernst Gombrich. First book I ever read on the arts and can't recommend it enough. It provided me with an adequate framework to study and understand the historical and ideological movement of art to this day. Written in a way that's easy to understand, I love seeing the formality and simplicity of Gombrich’s personality shining through!
