Why DID Finona/Emmy leave in the show? The reason behind it is the actor of Frank Gallagher, (William H. Macy) was getting paid more then Emmy. Emmy was going to stay, but the producers refused to raise her pay, so she quit.

Why did Carl go to military camp for multiple episodes, without having barely any screen time? Well that's because Ethan Cutkosky, (the actor of Carl) wanted to finish school, but couldn't find the time. So the producer's solution was to make the character go to camp while the actor went to school!

This fact might be surprising to some, but already known to others. Lots of people believe that the actor of Ian Gallagher, Cameron Monaghan was switched throughout the series. Why? Because Ian loses his freckles. But the real reason Ian doesn't have any freckles in the later seasons is simply because he's getting older. Most gingers tend to lose their freckles as they age.
