From Masikip To Maaliwalas! Teen's Tiny Bedroom Now Looks Bigger With A Few Upgrades

Get ideas on how you can make the most of a tiny space, too! by Cielo Anne Calzado  Mar 13, 2021

Allowing kids to have their own bedrooms is a way of teaching them to be independent and responsible. With the room as their “property,” they need to learn how to keep it organized so they can sleep comfortably and even study in the space, too.

Aside from furnishing it with a bed, you also need to make sure your kids have cabinets and a study table, if the room permits. In this makeover, the parents of a 16-year-old teenager wanted to revamp their son’s room to be able to create a study area, showcase his shoe collection, and incorporate enough storage.

The catch? The bedroom only measures 2.31sqm x 2.38sqm. Luckily, they were able to find interior decorator April Bumanglag for help. April, who completed an online course through The Interior Design Institute, immediately thought of working with a Scandinavian-meets-Muji-inspired design.

“Since the space is too small, I went for airy white walls to emphasize light and then added wooden elements to balance the mood,” the decorator explains.

How to work on a small space makeover

Working on a small space makeover can be challenging since you’re working in a compact area. To get started, keep these tips in mind:

1. Know what you want to achieve. In this makeover, April took into consideration the requirements of the homeowners such as display shelves, storage, and a study area.

2. Assess the space first and identify your existing electrical outlets before setting a budget. Check if there are corners that need to be repaired.

3. Choose a style that’s pleasing yet functional.

April came up with a functional design that’s also picture-perfect. In just four weeks and with a budget of Php71,000 she was able to create a brand-new bedroom! See the before and after photos below:

Dark walls can make a small space feel more cramped. According to April, the occupant seldom slept in his bedroom prior to the revamp.

April worked with neutral colors to create an illusion of space, then paired it with wooden touches to create warmth.

The room used to have a bulky cabinet that takes up most of the space and a bed that’s parallel with the window.

To meet her client’s requirements, April had the cabinet removed then chose to create a loft-type bed.

By raising the bed, she was able to create storage underneath, with the steps leading to the bed serving as mini cabinets, too.

Notice the slatted panel on the ceiling? It runs from the right wall that adds height to the bedroom. It’s also lighted so even if the main light is turned off, the occupant can have a version of a nightlight.

The room used to have wall-mounted shelves that weren’t enough to hold and display the occupant’s belongings.

April chose to have mini wall-mounted shelves installed which can hold the occupant’s favorite shoes.

She also had an additional shelf installed near the AC unit for other collectibles, and concealed the AC unit with a slatted cabinet to keep it from becoming an eyesore. Under the shelf and AC unit is the study area.

The occupant now has a comfy chair and a wall-mounted table perfect for studying. A wall-mounted table not only saves on floor space, it also gives the occupant enough leg room.

“Their son is so happy with the outcome. After the makeover, he now sleeps and stays in his bedroom. He also studies there,” shares April.

When it comes to creating a functional space, you can make every square meter count. Choose secret storage options and make use of the available vertical space by installing wall-mounted shelves. Working with lighter colors and floor-to-ceiling wooden slats can help create an illusion of space, too.

April hopes that her project will inspire others to pursue a new hobby or go for their interior decorating dreams. The Interior Design course she took can be completed at your own pace at an average of 24 weeks. “Don’t be afraid to learn new things," she says.

With online learning becoming the norm these days, why not look into the possibility of learning the basics of interior decorating? You can give your home a new look, in no time!
