Why I became a doula…

Having my first child in 2007, ignited a passion in me to work with pregnant people in some capacity but I didn’t know how. Labor and delivery was so fascinating to me that I considered becoming an OB/GYN because delivering babies seemed so cool but didn’t have the desire to go to school. I quietly set that dream aside until…

The experience with my second child, born June of 2020 in NYC, while under the care of passionate providers, with the support of a doula, I finally knew how I’d make my entrance in the world of birth work. I was called to become a doula and empower women through childbirth.

For months following the birth of my second baby I searched for the right course to begin my training but nothing spoke to me. Once a month I’d go back to the website of the organization I wanted to train with only to be disappointed when nothing sparked. A little over a year later I finally found “the one,” the school I’d train with and all I can say it was worth the wait!

Wondering how a doula can help?

Take a look at some of the ways we support birthing people, their partners and family.

Doula is a Greek word that translates to, “a woman’s servant,” but it is so much more than it’s translation.

A doula serves families with nurturing energy while educating them on their journey into parenthood. Offering emotional, physical and informational support to empower them in making choices that they can be comfortable with. Below are some examples of the support we provide.

The first step to a connection is emotion

Often times new parents don’t know what to expect when they are pregnant. A doula supports birthing people and their partners understand the changes that are happening with their emotions and their bodies.

Warming touch can bring on comfort

During labor and delivery physical support is crucial to remaining calm and staying centered. Focusing within through rhythmic breathing, gentle massage and adjusting labor positions are a few ways a doula promotes an intimate birth experience through comfort measures.

Advocating for you using evidence based information

Unsure about pain medication or wondering about the benefits of breastfeeding vs. formula? We answer all of those questions and more using only evidence-based information with no judgment or biased. A doula does the research so you don’t have to.

Did you know…?

Doulas don’t just serve pregnant people!

Now that we know the definition of the word doula, you may be surprised to learn that there are many different ways doulas are “a woman’s servant.” Supporting birthers after they’ve had their baby is another one of those ways.

Here you can learn more about the support we offer to parents who already gave birth!

Newborn care

New parent and never changed a diaper? Wondering which diaper rash cream is best? Not sure how to care for the umbilical? Is yellow poop normal? A doula is there is help you answer all of these questions and more! It is part of our duty to educate parent on making the choices for their baby that align with their style of parenting.

Nourishing your newborn

Doulas are equipped with the resources to help you understand the facts about how you decide to feed your baby. Whether you decide to chestfeed, formula feed or use donor milk we offer the support necessary without shame or biased.

You did it!

You birthed a baby and your hormones are now regulating. A postpartum doula listens to your feelings and helps you understand the wave of emotions. We are always near to assess for Perinatal Health Disorders and make referrals, if necessary.
