EAST COAST QUEENSLAND

Our favourite camps

Some amazing spots we have seen around Australia

Notch Point Queensland

Notch point is a hidden gem on the east coast below Mackay. There is beautiful blue water, coconut trees and a sandy bank to fish off.
The best part it it’s FREE!
One downside is it can get very windy and there’s no facilities but definitely add this one to the list as it’s such a stunning spot!

Norman River, Queensland

A hidden gem we found on Wiki camps south of Normanton. Used to spend a lot of time on the flinders river but this is our new go to in the area. Very quiet, no one else around which we like. Caught 6 Barra off the bank over three days.
If you like fishing definitely recommend this FREE camp.
No facilities here, Leave nothing but footprints…

Leichhardt Falls, Queensland

Name another place in Australia where you can camp in front of a waterfall for FREE!!
This place is bloody awesome and definitely a spot we will revisit. We spent our days chilling out on the rock ledge and swimming in the top of the waterfall with a beer in the afternoon.
Leichhardt has no facilities so be prepared to track it into the scrub!

King Ash Bay, Northern Territory

What a location! We absolutely love it here, and will be back.
$15 PP per night to stay here, great facilities and the servo sells everything you need.
Fishing is great and we filled our freezers up in just a few days!

Dundee Beach, Northern Territory

Another awesome FREE camp!
Dundee has some of the best sunsets we have ever seen. You can camp along the beach on the sand or drive down to the mouth of the river. We love it here, but it has become extremely busy in the last few years. Be prepared to stumble across a lot of caravans on stingray head and make sure you pick up your rubbish.
This spot has no facilities so bury your waste people!
Edit: Sadly you can’t camp here anymore, day trips only.

Hold it flats farm - Yalboroo, Queensland

$20 per night to stay at this awesome little spot on the river. We were only going to stay one night but ended up staying for two. Owners were lovely and it was such a good spot to jump in the beautiful clear water for a dip!

Buttons Crossing, Western Australia

Buttons has all the elements! We stayed here for 6 days soaking up the sun, fishing and having endless fresh water showers pumped out of the river!
One of the best FREE camps we have been to!

Highlights of the trip

Some of the things we have done along our journey that we would recommend to others

Bundaberg brewed drinks, Queensland

What an experience, This place was awesome!
We paid $15 pp for our visit to the Bundy drinks Barrel.
You get to try all 14 flavours and then pick any 6 to take home with you. Such good value!

Cardwell spa pools, Cardwell Queensland

The spa pools were awesome. We went early in the morning to beat the crowds and had the place all to ourselves. A magical nature pool well worth checking out!

The Great Barrier Reef, Cairns Queensland

An underwater wonderland. Such an amazing experience and so glad we squeezed this in on our trip. It’s a bit pricy but definitely worth it and an awesome day to always look back on.

Chillagoe Weir, Chillagoe Queensland

Stumbled across this beauty on wiki camps and boy were we happy about it. Crystal clear turquoise water and rocks to dive in from! Such a nice spot to check out if passing through.

Tom Prior’s Ford museum, Chillagoe Queensland

Tom has a huge display of old fords and a story behind each and every one. If your into old cars and fords we’d recommend checking it out!
A small donation is asked upon entry to the museum to help with maintenance of the space.

Cracker night, Northern Territory

July 1st is Territory day and it goes off with a bang!
For this one day of the year it’s legal to buy fireworks and you can get them almost everywhere. We spent cracker night at Gunn Point beach near Darwin and it was an experience we won’t forget in a hurry!
Make sure if you are planning to head to the NT you do it around July first to join in on the wild celebrations

Parap Saturday markets, Darwin Northern Territory

If you don’t like crowds this one probably isn’t for you!
Parap overflows with people, food stalls and pop up markets. We were told Mary’s Laksa is a must when visiting and they were right.

Big Crystal Creek, Mutarnee Queensland

Crystal clear water filtered out of the mountains. You have to see this place with your own eyes to believe how nice it is! Great spot for a cool off or day trip.

Bitter Springs, Mataranka Northern Territory

A great spot to stop for a swim. Jump in at the top and drift down through the trees till you reach the stairs.
If we were to go again we would take a pool ring or noodle to make the experience that much more relaxing!
Go early morning or late afternoon to try beat the crowds.

Crocodylus Park

Do yourself a favour and go check out this awesome park! They have some of the biggest crocs you will ever see and a huge range of animals to admire. Some of the loveliest tour guides you’ll meet work here.
We were lucky enough to work her for 6 weeks!
