Modern Media on Election Campaign Period
Social media had a noticeable impact on elections and set out a significant role. It can help politicians broadcast their platforms and engage themselves towards society to reach more voters and supporters, which has an extensive impact on their possible triumph. The candidate's money was raised and spent on social media advertisements and events, devoting many resources to social media campaigns. It is critical to understand how social media affects elections and how voters can use the web responsibly and effectively as the public focuses on their "watchdog" responsibility, including public inspection and discussion of the accomplishments and failures of candidates, administrations, and elections management authorities (McQuail, 1994).
On the other hand, what made the media more crucial for the upcoming presidential elections is how society approaches the controversial issues of the candidates posted and conveyed on the different media platforms. Social media has gotten highly reclusive. It sometimes held fake news and false accusations to the presidential candidates that threatened their candidacy. It accentuates and confirms the statements of the mass press without providing context or fact-checking, influencing public perceptions of politicians and their platforms. It facilitates the rapid and easy dissemination of erroneous information. When all of a candidate's falsified news, objectives, and remarks align with people's pre-existing assumptions and no one in their circle of acquaintances criticizes those pieces of information, disinformation spreads uncontrolled.
As Social media/ media is one of the dominant sources of information of the society, it should give certitude, verified pieces of information that would help the public point out who the true leader to be elected. It should inform the public of how effectively politicians have performed and help hold them accountable. Additionally, society’s approach to the information on the media mainly matters. As responsible users, we should be aware of what we see online and be precise about all the information we can gather. Capitalize our capabilities in using social media/media to expand our knowledge regarding the backgrounds of anything/anyone we see in the media. We should think about how our social media behavior affects others in their communities (J-PAL, n.d).
