What does Wunbirri mean?

The name ‘Wunbirri’ was given to me by my Nanna Rose and Marge on my partners side. It was the aboriginal name of their cousin. Sometimes aboriginal names can come from country or from family. We also can have skin names which determine which families we can marry into. In my case I was named by my partners family as mine have not yet named me and do not have a skin name. This is normal due to Australia’s colonization. I am thankful for this name and will do it proud with my art.

Why do I paint?

I have always been a very creative child and it wasn’t until I discovered my Aboriginal heritage that I really embraced my art. I prefer to paint modern art as my connection to culture is very different to many. I have a lot of catching up to do and self learning which I enjoy putting into my pieces to better understand home, my family and myself.

Growing up in both South Australia and the Northern Territory I have been blessed with learning about other communities art styles. My partners family is Wadjigan and I continuously learn from their expertise while I walk on his country.

Painting to me is more than a hobby, it is a way I connect with who I am and I use this to boost my self m-worth and love for learning my about culture. I believe every young Indigenous person can utilize painting as a way to ease the mind and embraces culture.
