BRUSH HAIR BEFORE WASHING
When washing hand-tied extensions, it is crucial to detangle your hair beforehand. I recommend using Kitsune’s detangling brush. Prior to wetting your hair extensions, brush them carefully, avoiding the weft line. This process will help smooth your hair and make it easier to distribute the shampoo and conditioner. Separating your rows and thoroughly brushing your hair will facilitate the application of products and ensure better coverage.
PREP FOR WASHING
For washing hand-tied extensions with multiple rows, it's important to ensure that each section is thoroughly cleaned. To achieve this, part your hair horizontally between the rows and secure the top half with a large clip or scrunchie before washing. Begin by wetting and shampooing the bottom half, paying special attention to the weft line. I recommend Goldie Locks Signature Shampoo. If your prone to build up on the scalp I recommend shampooing twice once with Goldie Locks Detox shampoo to remove the build up, and second with Goldie Signature Shampoo to hydrate and cleanse the scalp. (Both are linked for purchase at the bottom) Rinse thoroughly. Next, release the top section and repeat the process, focusing on shampooing along the weft line of the top row.
WASHING
To properly cleanse hand-tied extensions, it's important to be mindful of the placement of the weft line. As the extensions are arranged in a horseshoe shape around your head, it's best to work horizontally along the rows instead of vertically down your head. Take care to split the row between your index and middle finger, gently massaging your scalp to ensure thorough cleansing. Avoid vigorously scrubbing the top of the wefts or pulling on the row to prevent damage.
CONDITION MIDSHAFT & ENDS
When conditioning hand-tied extensions, it's important to focus on the mid-lengths to the ends of the hair strands. There is no need to apply conditioner to the top of the extensions where they are attached to your natural hair. Opt for a hydrating conditioner such as Goldie Signature Conditioner it’s is hydrating without leaving the hair feeling heavy and concentrate it on the actual hair strands. Gently brush the conditioner through your extensions to assist with detangling and smoothing before rinsing.
RINSE THOROUGHLY
It is essential to remember to rinse your hair extensions thoroughly. When you have multiple rows of hand-tied extensions, it's easy for conditioner residue to build up if not properly rinsed out. Take the time to separate between the rows one last time and ensure complete rinsing to remove all product residue.
MASKS
It’s imperative to keep your extensions hydrated. Weekly masks with Goldie Locks Hydrating Mask are recommended for this.
OIL/ SERUMS
It is imperative to oil your extensions daily to keep them in the best condition. Apply the oil at least once daily and brush your extensions 2-3x daily avoiding the weft line to prevent any tangling of the extension hair.

BLOW DRYING & STYLING
It is crucial when blow drying to ensure that the top of the weft line is completely dry to prevent potential issues. Take care to focus the blow dryer specifically on the top of the hand-tied wefts, ensuring that all moisture is thoroughly removed. Inadequate drying may result in moisture retention and swelling of the wefts, necessitating replacement. Additionally, insufficient drying can create an environment conducive to mold growth on the extensions. Therefore, it is vital to ensure proper and thorough drying of your hand-tied extensions after they become wet.
SLEEPING
When wearing hand-tied hair extensions, it is crucial to follow a proper nighttime preparation routine. Begin by thoroughly brushing your hair and applying a hydrating serum, and making sure your hair is completely dry before you go to bed. Next, secure your hair in a loose braid or bun to prevent rubbing against your pillowcase and minimize any potential pulling as you move during sleep. It is important to ensure that any fastening of your hair is gentle and not overly tight, avoiding excessive tension or strain on the extensions.
HARD WATER
Dealing with hard water can be frustrating, especially when it comes to maintaining the health and appearance of your hair and extensions. Hard water, which contains high mineral content, can cause issues like rapid hair color fading, an unwanted orange hue at the roots of extensions, build-up, and dryness of the hair. To combat these problems, installing a shower head filter is a practical solution. One popular choice among users is the Aqua Bliss shower head filter, available on Amazon (Iinked below). This filter effectively removes harsh minerals from the water, helping to protect your hair and extensions from the damaging effects of hard water. With a shower head filter in place, you can enjoy healthier, more vibrant hair without the worries of hard water-related issues.
SWIMMING
Yes, you can swim with extensions, but it's important to exercise caution. Some water contains minerals that can react negatively with extensions, causing discoloration or dryness. To prevent this, follow these tips:
1. Wet your hair before entering the water and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair mask.
2. Brush the conditioner or mask through your hair, then braid it tightly or put it in a bun or ponytail.
3. Immediately brush, wash, and dry your hair after swimming.
4. Be cautious with sunscreen as certain brands may cause unwanted color changes. Consider using the "bare republic" brand available at Ulta or Target.
By taking these steps, you can swim with extensions while minimizing potential damage.
AFTER GYM
After hitting the gym or spending time in humid conditions like steam rooms, taking care of your hair extensions is essential. Make sure to dry them as soon as possible to avoid moisture-related issues like swelling and moisture retention. Don't forget to pay extra attention to the weft line, where your natural hair meets the extensions. Leaving them damp for too long can lead to unpleasant surprises like mold or mildew. Once they're dry, give them a gentle brush or comb to keep them looking fabulous and tangle-free.
