ENGLISH PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY

SPEECH ORGAN

What is speech organ?

Any part of the body , as the tongue , velum, diaphragm, or lungs, that participates, actively or passively, voluntarily or involuntarily, in the production of the sounds of speech.

  1. Speech Organ Diagram

    Speech Organ Diagram

  2. What is Articulation?

It is the act of expressing something in coherent verbal form, or an aspect of pronunciation involving the articulatory organs

  3. PLACE & MANNER OF ARTICULATION

    - The place of articulation refers to “the point in the vocal tract where the speech organs restrict the passage of air in some way so producing distinctive speech sounds” (Finch, 1999)

    - Places of articulation are more frequently used to describe consonants than vowels.

    - The manner of articulation refers to the way the articulators are set so that the resonance effect is possible.

  4. PLACE OF ARTICULATION

  5. BILABIAL

Sounds formed by both lips coming together” (Finch, 1999).

    Examples include /b/, /p/ and /m/.

  6. LABIO-DENTAL

“Sounds formed by the bottom lip touching the upper teeth” (Finch, 1999).

    Examples include /v/ and /f/.

  7. DENTAL

“Sounds formed by the tongue touching the upper teeth” (Finch, 1999).

These are not common in English, although they can sound like /t/ or /d/. If you imagine saying ‘Barcelona’ with a heavy Spanish accent, you might hear it.

  8. ALVEOLAR

“Sounds formed by the tongue coming into contact with the hard, or alveolar, ridge immediately behind the upper teeth” (Finch, 1999).

The Alveolar sounds are common in plosive English sounds such as /t/, /d/ and /n/, and in fricative sounds such as /z/.

  9. POST-ALVEOLAR

Sounds formed by the tongue curled behind the alveolar ridge” (Finch, 1999).
Examples include the /ʃ/ and /ʒ/, or the ‘sh’ sounds in words like ‘ship’, or the ‘s’ sound in words like ‘vision’.

  10. PALATO - ALVEOLAR

Sounds formed by the tongue in contact with both the roof of the mouth, or hard palate, and the alveolar ridge” (Finch, 1999).
Examples include the /tʃ/ and /dʒ/ sounds in ‘church’ and ‘judge’.

  11. PALATAL

“Sounds formed by the middle of the tongue up against the hard palate” (Finch, 1999).

The /j/ sound is the only consistent example of a palatal sound in English. This sound forms the ‘y’ in words like ‘yes’ and ‘yellow’.

  12. VELAR

“Sounds formed by the back of the tongue against the soft palate, or velum” (Finch, 1999).

Think of the /k/ in ‘kick’, or the /g/ in ‘go’. The ‘ng’ sound / ŋ/ in words like ‘sing’ and ‘tongue’ is also a velar sound.

  13. INTERDENTAL

Produced by the tip of the tongue protruding between the upper and lower teeth.

Interdental sounds include the ‘th’ sound /θ/ in words like ‘thing’ and ‘author’, or the /ð/ in words like ‘this’ and ‘other’.

  14. UVULAR

Sounds formed by the root of the tongue being raised against the velum.

The ‘r’ in French (try saying the word ‘Paris’ with a broad French accent), or the Arabic /q/ or /G/ are uvular sounds. English doesn’t have a uvular sound.

  15. RETROFLEX

There are other places of articulation which are not really used in English, and the retroflex is one of the.

Here, the tongue is curled back on itself to create a rolling /r/ sound against the alveolar ridge.

  16. GLOTTAL

Sounds formed from the space between the vocal folds, or glottis” (Finch, 1999).

There is no picture here because it is rather difficult to illustrate.

The glottal sound /ʔ/ can be heard in the affirmative expression ‘uh-huh’, and in certain estuary or cockney accents it is used to replace the /t/ sound in words like ‘better’.

  17. MANNER OF ARTICULATION

So far we have seen that sound can be shaped as it passes through the vocal chords, and as the air is passed from the lungs passed the pharyngeal cavity, the nasal cavity or the oral and labial cavities.

The sound variations created by these vocal apparatus are known as the manner of articulation.

In other words, the manner of articulation refers to the ways in which sound is altered by manipulation of the flow of the airstream from the lungs.

There are five principal types of manner for consonant sounds, which are here adapted from Finch's Linguistic Terms and Concepts (1999):

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS

Summary Of the Story

Goldilocks goes for a walk in the forest and comes upon a house. She enters and helps herself to porridge, sits in the chairs, and sleeps in the beds.

Meanwhile, the bears who own the house come home and much to their surprise they discover the outcome of what Goldilocks has done to their porridge, chairs and their beds.

Goldilocks wakes with a fright when she sees and hears the bears; she jumps from the bed and runs away as fast as she can.

STORY

A little girl named Goldilocks goes for a walk in the forest. She comes upon a house and knocks on the door. When nobody answers the door, she walks right in.

She finds three bowls of porridge on the kitchen table. She tastes the first two bowls: one is too hot and the other too cold. She tastes the third – it tastes just right! So, she eats it up.

After eating the porridge, Goldilocks feels tired. So she goes to the living room of the house and finds three chairs there. The first two chairs are too big for her, but the third one is just right for her. But as she settles into the chair, it breaks.

Then she moves on to the bedroom, where she finds three beds. She finds one bed too hard, and the other too soft. The third bed is just right, and so she lies down and falls asleep.

Meanwhile the owners – a family of bears – return home. Seeing what has happened to their porridge, chairs, and seeing Goldilocks sleeping on their bed, they get angry. The little girl wakes up frightened when she sees and hears the bears. She jumps from the bed and runs away as fast as she can.

MORAL LESSON

1. We Don't All Come In One Size

The bears had three different sized chairs, bowls and beds because they were not the same age or of the same size. Each item in their house was tailored to fit their individual needs. Goldilocks herself even tried them all until she found the right chair, bowl of porridge and the right bed for her.

We don't don't all come in one size. We all have different wants, needs and opinions all based on many different factors that occur in our daily lives. We cannot force others to be all the same. Instead we must celebrate our differences and as John Lennon put it best " And the world will be as one."

2. We All Like and Want Different Things

Goldilocks had her own likes and dislike. She tried each item in the house until she found the ones she liked. The ones which suited her needs. Of course she left a trail of destruction in her wake but that's a tale for another time.

What does this mean for you? In your daily you're going to come across people who are different than you. These people have different likes and dislikes, wants and needs.

The key to living together as one is in taking the time to learn everyone's story. See where they'er coming from. In this we can all be moving along, all together different but working as one.

3. Help Those Who Need Help

The third lesson centers not on Goldilocks but on the reactions of the three bears when they found and intruder in their home. Goldilocks was never welcomed into the bears house. She took it upon herself to enter and partake of what the house had to offer.

The bears when finding her there could have been angry and chased her out of the house. They had every right to protect their home just as we all do today. The bears however chose to reach out a paw in friendship and hospitality to Goldilocks.

The lesson for us all is to do the same. Not to let people to stroll into our homes whenever they want but to reach out a helping hand with maybe a meal, a few moments of our time, or whatever the need may be.

Goldilocks - One final thought

There you have them. Three moral lessons, which are arguably the cornerstone of life, from a children's story. This time Goldilocks and the Three Bears. When you read stories to your children take the time to find the morals you can teach your children. Every story has them if only you look closely.
