A small cattle dog on a big mission!
“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.” This quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe leaves one to ponder… What if dogs only ever do dog things because that’s all we ever expect of them? With this idea in mind, Boba has been raised and trained to do and be as much as he’s capable of becoming. He’s already exceeded every expectation we had for him, but we’re just getting started.
He’s is a super smart 3-year-old Australian Cattle Dog (a.k.a. Blue Heeler) who has been “homeschooled” by his dog mom & handler since he joined his forever family at eight weeks old, and now works full time as her service dog. And boy, does he like to work! But not just any job, he would prefer to do ALL THE JOBS, please! He follows his mom & coworkers around all day trying to help (whether they need it or not), enthusiastically waiting for someone to give him small jobs to do - such as person to person deliveries within his family’s business warehouse, unwrapping delivered pallets, retrieving dropped items for literally everyone, etc.
On top of the extensive list of service dog tasks and other odd jobs he enjoys performing daily, he also has an incredible understanding of spoken English - estimated at nearly 400 words/phrases at this time. This understanding has allowed Boba to pick up other amazing skills - such as accurately answering simple Yes-No questions about objects/people/situations in his environment, adding/counting up to six (so far), matching shapes, and the ability to visually recognize 6-8 written words (so far). He was also the first ever non-human to be invited by NASA to attend a #NASASocial rocket launch!
