About

Debs' Court Of Dreams

My name is Deborah (she/her), and I'm an Italian bookworm and fangirl. I was born in 1996 and raised in the South of this beautiful country, in a small town near the beach.

I've always been the odd girl, the one who dressed strangely and didn't fit in. I've always thought that if I lived in a magical world, I wouldn't be human -- I've always felt more at ease with a pair of wings or pointed ears, and speaking another language.

I'm a warm, nostalgic soul. I was born in July, so I'm a Cancer sun (Taurus ☽, Virgo↑ for the astrology nerds) and you can definitely tell from the amount of tears and the romantic stares, the daydreams, the mom friend moments and the Taylor Swift references. I'm a super awkward and shy INFP-T, an enneagram type 4 and a Highly Sensitive Person.

I've been reading since I was a child. I can't say I'm a fast reader, though. I'm more of a slow but attentive kind of bookworm: always noticing the smallest details about my current read, always overanalyzing things. Growing up, I've developed a sort of affection towards YA literature (especially contemporaries dealing with delicate themes) and I love escaping reality through fantasy books. Like many other late 90s kids, one of my greatest obsessions as a teenager was Twilight. Though I now acknowledge the long list of the series' flaws, I do have to thank my insane love for Jacob Black for consecrating me to the fangirl life (well, I also have to thank Goku and Disney for that, if I gotta be honest).

In 2018 I decided that my enthusiasm for stories was too big to be contained, so I opened this space and “learned” (more “tried and failed until they looked decent”-- and that's what I still do) to take pictures and write reviews, and this sort of changed my life, because now I feel I can't live without it.

Back in 2018, when I had to pick a name for the space I wanted to create, “Debs' Court of Dreams” sparked in my mind and it sounded perfect to me: at that time I was reading ACOWAR, but it has less to do with it than you imagine. I wanted to create a sort of virtual literary salon, where we could gather and share our enthusiasm. I didn't want it to be limited to books, and I've always been a dreamer (+ the alliteration sounds so good!), so I borrowed the expression from an author I loved and made it mine. Today, Debs' Court of Dreams has become so much more.

When I'm not reading, I'm a graduate in Modern Languages & Tourism, pursuing my dreams: I graduated in 2021 with a B.A. in Linguistics on Constructed Languages in Fantasy. Someone would probably say that I'm “a daughter of words”, since I've always been fascinated by how language works, and by the sounds and the connections between different words - they just come natural to me. Plus, I've always felt like germanic languages--especially English--were the ones my soul spoke.
By now I'm fluent in English and French, I'm an intermediate in Spanish and a beginner in German and Norwegian. One of the things I love the most about languages is untranslatable words, and my favorite one is “hygge”: the feeling of coziness you get for example when you're reading by the fire while sipping tea, wrapped in a wool sweater.
I also like travelling and connecting with different cultures.

My dream is to work as a translator or in the publishing industry, and thanks to this platform I've recently discovered my love for social media marketing & communication.

Blog

What you'll find in my Court:

Books, musicals, events, movies & more

Of course the main topic here is books

Some of my all-times favorite books are I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. I also ADORE the Grishaverse & ACOTAR! Here you'll find reviews, recommendations, translation analysis and we'll talk about the latest releases!

But I consume stories in every form, thus including TV shows...

Some of my favorites are Skam, Glee and This Is Us, but I'm also a huge Stranger Things fan, and I used to love The Flash. Sometimes I'll find a new TV show to obsess over and we'll discuss it together!

... And movies.

My favorite movies include The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe, The Great Gatsby and Disney's Hercules. Oh, and I'm a big Marvel fan! I love commenting on the movies I watch, and someday I'll try to schedule a watch party!

I'm also a Swiftie

And you'll surely hear me ramble about the latest Taylor Swift album. I've grown up with Taylor's music and there's at least one song for every moment of my life.

And a theatre kid.

Yup, I'm a musical nerd. Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton and Wicked are my top three, but I also particularly love Hadestown, and Tick, Tick...BOOM! (The movie directed by LMM) is my religion.
In 2022 I started my monthly musical Watch Parties! Stay tuned for #DebsCourtOfMusicals

Sometimes I'll tell you about a trip I've taken...

Because I'm a wanderer and wonderer and I love traveling and experiencing different countries and cultures. My bachelor degree is actually in Foreign Languages for Tourism.

... And some events I've attended (or hosted!)

Conventions, bookish events, reunions with my bookish squad, interviews with authors... And stay tuned for #ATeaAtCourt!

And I'll tell you about my #ArcAdventures

The column in which I review little gems I read in advance and I recommend my favorites to you. You can find it on my blog! I love discovering new voices and giving you my thoughts before the books are released. It's one of the perks of this world I will always be grateful for.

We will talk about mental health

And you will get the highs and lows of being a highly sensitive person. Sometimes I struggle with anxiety and depression and I find comfort in books and stories. I also love discovering new things about me or other people's perspectives through fiction (especially #ownvoices) and non-fiction.

And about languages, uni & work life.

You'll basically get a slice of my life sometimes, because I love sharing some moments with you and connect with my community. Or sometimes I'll just find some random word I love and I will want to tell you, because that's what excited linguists do. Oh, and I'm also VERY interested in fictional languages!

Sometimes I'll just go on Fangirl mode

Bear with me, okay? I'll adopt characters, scream about ships and go super sentimental. I'll definitely not be rational. That's me, that's normal.

And so you'll find plenty of candles and merch.

Because I'm a huge collector, and I believe that bookish candles are pure magic.

But mostly, I want this to be a safe space

Where we can talk about everything, and where everyone is loved and welcome. There's just one rule: to respect each other and have polite conversations.
Enjoy your stay!
