Disabling the Narrative

Changing how the world views Disability

Imagine growing up in a world where you never see yourself represented in media, and if you do it’s a stigmatized and negative version of something that makes you, you.

For many Children and Adults with disabilities, this is their reality. “Disabled” characters aren’t played by disabled actors, evil villains are given disability tropes as “scare tactics” and disabled characters often only exist for pity.

Disabled people deserve to see themselves in media authentically and in a true light. And the change starts now.

How Disabling the Narrative began…

The Who, the Why, the How

Welcome to Disabling the Narrative! The way I am changing how the world views Disability.

My name is Jill Elaine, I am 24 years old and in 2013, I was 13 years old. One day I was healthy, happy and active-and then overnight I became chronically ill, bedridden and fighting for my life. Since then I have on a journey of hope and healing! Taking my personal story of how I turned my pain into my purpose.

I am personally disabled, I have worked with others with disabilities and volunteer and advocate in disability organizations. I quickly saw how inaccurate those with disabilities are represented, or not represented at all in media, news and beyond. So I decided to change that. Now I’m currently writing and illustrating a Childrens book, while teaching others about disability rights and
inclusivity!
