The Perro de Presa Canario, Presa Canario or Presa originated in the Canary Islands in the 1800s. The Canary Mastiff is categorized as a working class dog used to manage livestock but the Presa is of great decent with a rich legacy.
The Presa is extremely alert, protective, and territorial. They are very docile and affectionate, but yet still manages to maintain their protective demeanor when around weary strangers. The beauty in the breed is, a well bred Presa Canario typically is stable, predictable, takes long naps and extremely food driven.
It is very important to train your Presa. This is a powerful and very intelligent breed, so teaching at least the basic skills will be okay for a regular dog lover.
The Presa Canario is a large breed dog ranging from 90-120lbs on average for females, and 110- 140lbs on average for males. Presa Canarios have short hair so it’s easy to manage and generally are fawn or brindle in color. Presa’s have very thick, muscular frames, large chests, and massive heads with their ears typically cropped and tails left long. The life expectancy for the breed ranges from 9-12 years like most large breeds.
The Canary Mastiff loves to play with other dogs and people. Proper socialization and development with supervision will foster you a Presa who loves to guard, protect, companionship, and proud to become a trusted member of your family.
