Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences

This subject introduces students to basic concepts, subjects, and methods of inquiry in the disciplines that comprise the Social Sciences. It then discusses influential thinkers and ideas in these disciplines, and relates these ideas to the Philippine setting and current global trends. Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences widened our insights about social sciences and different disciplines. This subject helped us to interpret personal and social experiences using relevant approaches in the Social Sciences and helped us in analyzing our strengths and weaknesses. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Marxism. It is about a set of theories of economic and political thought developed by Karl Marx along with Friedrich Engels. Marxism influenced us about culture. Capitalist society is made up of two classes: The bourgeoisie, or business owners, who control the means of production, and the proletariat, or workers, whose labor transforms raw commodities into valuable economic goods. Ordinary laborers, who do not own the means of production, such as factories, buildings, and materials, have little power in the capitalist economic system.

Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences

This subject introduces some Applied Social Sciences which are Counseling, Social Work, and Communication, that draw their foundation from the theories and principles of Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and other Social Sciences. Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences highlights the seamless interconnectivity of the different applied social science disciplines while focusing on the processes and applications of these applied disciplines in critical development areas. This subject helped us to understand and utilize the disciplines of counseling and value rights, responsibilities, and accountabilities. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Counseling. It is one of the approaches most frequently used in health education to help individuals and families. Through counseling, individuals are encouraged to think about their problems and thus come to a greater understanding of the causes. Counseling can help you understand what is getting in the way of making the changes you want in your life. Some of the benefits of counseling are improved communication and interpersonal skills, greater self-acceptance and self-esteem.

Creative Writing

This subject aims to develop practical and creative skills in reading and writing. It introduces students to the fundamental techniques of writing fiction, poetry, and drama. Also, to discuss the use of such techniques by well-known authors in a variety of genres. Creative Writing helped us to determine various modes of fiction and explore the different orientations of creative writing. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Fiction and Its Elements. This lesson will deepen your reading comprehension because it helps them understand what is important. The elements of fiction helped us in analyzing the Character, Setting, Point of View, Plot, Conflict and Theme of the story. Elements of fiction are the most important things in writing short stories. Every element represents a different explanation and interpretation of what the meanings that author wants to deliver to the reader. These elements will help you construct the important parts of your story effectively and it will deepen your plot.

Creative Non-fiction

This subject focuses on formal elements and writing techniques, including autobiography and blogging. Creative Nonfiction introduces the students to the reading and writing of Creative Nonfiction as a literary form. This subject helped us develop our skills in reading, and thinking critically and creatively, that will help them to be imaginative readers and writers. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Literary Elements. It actually influences us to think that this lesson means by which writers or storytellers manipulate words in specific patterns to unfold their stories and experiences. Literary Elements is a technique employed by the creative writer to produce artistic effects that will immerse the reader into narratives, stories, or texts. This helped us understand the different literary elements and enabled us to create samples of these elements based on one’s experience. Literary devices work alongside plot and characters to elevate a story and prompt reflection on life, society, and what it means to be human.

Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems

This subject explores the main belief and practices of major world religions, which are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and Shintoism. Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems aims to help learners understand the historical contexts of nine religions, appreciate their uniqueness and similarities and promote mutual understanding among believers of different faiths. This subject helped us to understand and appreciate one’s faith and that of others. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Positive and Negative Effects of Religion. This lesson elaborates the positive and negative effects of religion. Some positive effects of religion are that it inspires values that cultivate peace, compassion and kindness. Religion upholds traditions of shaping human's spirituality and embracing the goodness in each individual. While negative effects of religion is promotion of discrimination and affirmation of social hierarchy. This subject helped us to understand the worldview of each of the world’s major religions and is critical in appreciating their rituals and practices.

Philippine Politics and Governance

This subject introduces us to the basic concepts and vital elements of politics and governance from a historical-institutional perspective. In particular, it attempts to explain how the important features of our country’s political structures/institutions, processes, and relationships developed across time. This subject helped us to gain a better appreciation of their rights and responsibilities as individuals and as members of the larger sociopolitical community to strengthen their civic competence. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Politics. This is an action that the government made for the rules and laws of its country. Politics is the use of force to affect the behavior of another person or group. This lesson helped us to explore the connection between politics and Political Science. Politics is about making agreements between people so that they can live together in groups such as tribes, cities, or countries. Studying Politics provides the kind of information and the broad skills especially important for citizens in a democracy who are supposed to show an interest in what their government does, and to vote accordingly.

Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century

This subject provides opportunities for us to discover patterns and extract meanings from emerging trends. It aids in developing their critical and creative thinking skills. Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century helped us realize the interconnections between their neural connections and social realities. One of the topics in this subject which really caught our attention is Democracy. This lesson explains the system of government where citizens choose their representatives to form a governing body. A democratic government focuses on freedom and opportunities for people to improve on their abilities as well as express themselves for greater self-determination. Democracy is one of the best forms of government for the reason that it improves the quality of decision-making, it provides a method to deal with differences and conflicts, and it enhances the dignity of citizens. Democracy is better than other forms of government because it allows us to correct our own mistakes.

Tracing my Family's roots and Relatives —

The activity above is tracing my family's roots and relatives. This activity was all about knowing, recording, and preserving your family's history. This activity is one of the most challenging yet fulfilling activities we've ever done, because it helps us to get to know our ancestors better, it also helps us identify our core identity by knowing our cultural background and where we came from. Tracing your family's history is one of the most important missions you must do for yourself, because through this, you will be able to know more about yourself. It is also important to show respect to your ancestors by acknowledging them even if they are no longer here in the world.

Disciplines of Social Sciences —

You can find in this activity the different Disciplines of Social Sciences. Social science is a manner of understanding how minds work, to how societies as a whole function. There are ten disciplines in this activity, the first is Archeology. This is the study of humanity. It relies much more on the material evidence left behind by cultures. Area studies is the study of a political or geographical area. While Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Anthropology studies cultural meaning, including norms and values. Cultural and Ethnic studies is the comparative analyses of racial and ethnic groups, interpretations of cultural practices. Gender Sexuality is the way in which gender and sexuality are often viewed as likened constructs, whereby the role of gender in an individual's life is informed by and impacts others' perceptions of their sexuality. Economics looks at the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Lastly, Political Science, this subject allows for studying both historical and current events. These are the simple elucidations of each discipline.

Counseling —

The activity is all about creating a script regarding counselling. Where there's a scenario that shows what is the role of a counselor and how to solve the problem faced by a patient. Counselor handles and identifies solutions for the patient's problems. In doing this we appreciate the importance of counseling. Counseling is a collaborative effort between a professional counselor and its client, wherein a counselor helps its client to seek for the possible solutions regarding its psychological problems that causes the client mentally and emotionally unstable.

Stages of Counseling —

This activity above is all about 5 major stages of counseling:Here they are: Stage 1-Initial Disclosure. In this stage, the main focus is relationship building. When I say relationship building, in this setting, I mean establishing rapport with the client that is based on trust, respect, and care. Stage 2- In Depth-Exploration. In this stage you will hone in on problem assessment. One of the major reasons a client goes to talk with a counselor is to have help resolving problems or concerns that interfere with their daily lives, or are causing them major heartache. Stage 3- commitment to action, or goal setting. The client’s focus is going to be on the problem, but the counselor needs to be focused on the problem, the client, the counseling process, and the overall goal. Goals help to give direction during each session. In goal setting, the client identifies, with the help of the counselor, specific ways to move towards change and the best course of action to help make that happen. Stage 4- Counseling Intervention. There are 3 steps within the counseling intervention stage, step 1-Summarize the problem, step 2- Identify a strategy, step 3 – Select and Implement intervention. Summarize the problem using the four dimensional analysis, which includes four different components, Affective, behavioral, cognitive, and interpersonal/systemic component. Stage 5- Evaluation, Termination or Referral. Termination is something that you want to move towards. Ideally, termination happens when the goals that are mutually agreed on by the counselor and client have been achieved, or the problem has become more manageable or resolved.

Reaction Video of Kambas ng Lipunan —

This activity is a reaction video about the video entitled On the Canvas of Society. The canvas of society shows a very deep concern regarding the simple but memorable painting of an ordinary Filipino artist who was inspired by the young people living on the streets. This film was made by Mr. Joey Velasco. His film The canvas of society aims to touch the heart of every individual living in our society. It targets human awareness regarding the endless problem facing our country. His documentary painting is table of hope, a recasting of The Last Supper in which Jesus Christ is at a dinner table with hungry street children featured in this short documentary. Here you will get to know different aspects of life, especially the poor street children who work hard just to survive. Different faces, different places, different stories, but only one problem is poverty.

Short story —

This short story that we made entitled "Fear not, Trust a lot", this story gives the knowledge that whatever we have done is okay and there is no need to make it a big deal because there are things that are really not for us. Yes, it is normal to be afraid and everything we have fears. But we must always remember that the Lord is always there for us. Also this story motivates us not to give up on your problem immediately. And reminds us that we can talk about Jesus Christ any time you want. Just tell him about your problem and heal it as soon as possible.I believe that the only healing power that is true and real comes from Jesus Christ, the great physician. The thing is, God always desires for us to be healed. He is a loving God who cares for his children. But the difficult thing for us is that we need to trust in his timing.

Poem —

This activity is a poem with a rhyme and meter. The topic in the first poem is all about cell phones, the poem tells that the cellphone is an instrument for communication, that can help to increase security and it can help when there is an emergency but it can affect the emotion of the cell phone user. The rhyme scheme that we used in this poem is the Enclosed rhyme (or enclosing rhyme) is the rhyme scheme ABBA (that is, where the first and fourth lines, and the second and third lines rhyme). Enclosed-rhyme quatrains are used in introverted quatrains, as in the first two stanzas of Petrarchan sonnets. The second poem is all about classmates. This AABB rhyme scheme uses sections of four lines divided into two couplets. A couplet consists of two lines that rhyme with each other.

Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems

Positive and Negative Effects of Religion  —

Positive effect is that it binds people who are in one religion to have strong faith in God. Negative effect is that it serves as a reason for debates that cause conflict to people who are in different religions. Though perceived religious influence on health behavior reflects a positive role of religious involvement in health, not all religious influences are positive/adaptive in nature.Negative religious coping involves spiritual struggle with one's self, others, and a higher power. Just like in a picture,Religion also provides a beautiful relation in other religions, strength and bonding in our family. But many religions teach that some people will go to hell after they die. That’s a pretty dark thing to believe. It’s pretty harsh to say that someone deserves to suffer for all eternity.

Timeline of Different Religion —

Studying religion increases cultural awareness. It integrates the accumulated knowledge of the centuries into a holistic understanding of human societies. -Buddhism: A way of living based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. The Five Precepts are the basic rules of living for lay Buddhists – refrain from harming living beings; taking what is not given; sexual misconduct; harmful speech; and drink or drugs which cloud the mind. -Christianity Based on the teaching of Jesus Christ. Christian groups differ in their interpretation of his teaching, life, death and resurrection, but these matters are at the heart of the way of life of all of them. -Hinduism An ancient tradition of related beliefs and practices that developed in the Indian subcontinent. Core ideals and values shared by most Hindus would include respect for elders; reverence for teachers; regard for guests and tolerance of all races and religions. -Islam Revealed in its final form by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The essentials of Muslim practice are summarised in the five pillars of Islam – declaration of faith; ritual prayer; welfare; a month of fasting during Ramadan; and pilgrimage. -Judaism Based around the Jewish people's covenant relationship with God. Jews believe they are challenged and blessed by God. Love of one's neighbour is the great principle of social life and the founding inspiration of the Jewish community. -Sikhism The religion founded by Guru Nanak in India in the 15th Century CE. There is one God, people should serve by leading a life of prayer and obedience. Sikhs believe their soul then passes through various existences and will become one with God.

These are the Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Executive branch carries out laws and exercising authority in and holding responsibility for the governance of a state. Legislative branch makes laws and declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies. Undemocratic Practices —

This is a performance task for the subject TNCT. The performance task is all about making a visual presentation that shows undemocratic practices that are related to different factors such as gender biases, poverty, political marginalization and racial inequality. The first box shows the inequality in gender roles wherein the female only works at home while the male works to earn money. This practice shows that only a man has the capability to work for their financial necessities and that the women should stay home to take care of all the house chores and children. The second box shows poverty , wherein a person is begging for money to survive a day without a home. This is the biggest problem that is still happening nowadays. The third box shows racism, wherein black people are shouting for justice because some of them are killed and discriminated against by white people. This is one of the most problems encountered in racism. And the last box shows Political marginalization, wherein some people are not allowed to vote. Voting rights is important because this is our chance to choose a leader who can lead his country very well by accommodating the needs of his people, and can also bring peace to his place.

Poem —

This performance task is about your resolution about how you can personally contribute towards solving the problem of climate change. This activity expounds on how you can give and make your world a healthy and bracing environment. Climate change has different effects and few of them are increased heat, drought and insect outbreaks, all linked to climate change, have increased wildfires. We need to Reduce, Recycle and Recover for our planet to be saved and to lessen the bad effects of global warming. As the poem stated, Reduce your waste to minimize pollution, Recycle your waste to benefit your environment, and Reduce your waste to lessen earth's sickness. "Reuse the past, Recycle the present and save the future."

Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship

My Community —

The drawing above is a community, as we all know that community is a small or large group of people in different sectors. Group of people who interact with one another. People living close to others on their territory. Where they are sharing beliefs, practices, values and a lot of things. People's know to follow regulations or policies in one group. This community has four perspectives. The system perspective, social perspective, virtual perspective and individual perspective which helped to make our community more beautiful, orderly and be as one. The activity became like that because it is based on the four perspectives of the community which the Municipality serves as a system perspective. The Municipality has a Legislative building where our father of the town, other leaders of the community and even in law positions. They act as one, plan as one and move as one to provide based on the needs of the people in the community. The Police station where it serves as a social perspective . Police station where the Police are there who plan or act to make the individuals, leaders and community safe and keep it orderly. They are required to keep all enforced laws and activities in order. Globe Telecom serves as a virtual perspective, in today's era it is really necessary like globe telecom and other modern technologies to be used in communicating with other people using technologies. In this pandemic, our community , leaders, head teachers have been launched that can be used for education like WiFi, tablets, and even E-books. Other Individual person, family, kids, adults who belong to an individual perspective. That a community cannot be formed if there are no people living in it.

Acrostic  —

The activity above is an Acrostic about Community in relation to the perspective of social sciences and Community in relation to the perspective of nongovernmental organizations. Community refers to the people who exist and coexist with each other and who share a lot of things in common. One of the importance of community is that community is a familiar thread used to bring people together to advocate and support each other in the fight to overcome those threats. Community in relation to the perspective of social sciences is a group of people whose connections and relations are formed by their shared history, experiences, geographies and identities. While the relation to the perspective of nongovernmental organizations is that NGOs play a significant role in today's society, typically picking up the government's deficits in services and social protection for citizens via the philanthropy of donors and the socially aware. These two acrostics explicates our understanding towards a community and these also give a handful of ways on how you can contribute something good to your community.
