An Experimental Documentary on the Sexual objectification of Black Women in the creative space
I mainly paint the female body because I am uncomfortable with my own for multitude of reasons like childhood experiences , learned perspectives and ongoing battles I have with my own body and body dysmorphia, and one of the ways I best tap into that is by painting the body itself , that is the truest form of my vulnerability and just putting that on paper or on canvas.
I am aware that the work could be interpreted differently because with my posts I don’t really have captions or speak about the work in detail because I believe that leaves the viewer to question what it’s all about outside of it being just a naked body that is sexual .The art
I make of naked women I don’t sell it because I don’t know how the consumer will consume or view the work , I wouldn’t want to participate in women being objectified but I paint it because it’s a matter of representation because I believe black women should be represented in their truest form . Representation of black women is important but who represents black women is even more important , being a black woman painting the black body is celebrating other black women
For the past couple of weeks the AFDA third year students had an opportunity to make experimental documentaries that will be viewed on the 25th of June at the annual online AFDA Experimental Festival. Crew one followed 3 Black Female artists who explored the effects of sexualisation in their industries and how that has also affected their own personal lives . And we would love for you to meet the crew
