While food is the ideal way to get your vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and other substances necessary for health, supplementation may be advised to meet your nutrient needs. Prior to taking any supplements, it’s recommended to check with your doctor and/or review lab values related to the status of the micronutrient. Your doctor can help identify contraindicated nutrient-nutrient interactions. For example, high calcium intake may inhibit the absorption of iron or other trace nutrients.

In addition, your diet might be adequate in meeting your nutrient needs. Review the micronutrients that were low or below average and assess whether your diet is rich in foods that contain those nutrients. For example, if you eat lots of fruits and vegetables daily, you’re likely meeting your vitamin C needs without a supplement.

Take any supplement as prescribed. More is not better. If you eat a healthy diet, the lowest dose on the supplement is likely enough. Finally, be aware of other "fortified foods," such as vitamin and mineral fortified breakfast cereals that you eat in addition to supplements. Avoid exceeding the "Tolerable Upper Limit (UL)" set for safety.
