Nothing is Impossible

by Leica Kenisha A. Bucao

Upon finally completing Junior High School, I found myself thinking about which strand I wanted to undertake. I explored the college course I wanted, as well as the best Senior High School strand for the college course I desired.

The course I want is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology; according to my research, it's either HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Since BS Psychology is more focused on science, some vloggers I know who are psychology students, as well as articles I've read, prefer the STEM strand whether they want to pursue BS Psychology.

At first, I was hesitant to apply for a strand focused on subjects in which I am not notably knowledgeable. To be honest, mathematics and science are one of the subjects I'm not really fond of. I used to have bad grades in those subjects.

Computer and computer-related subjects have always been subjects that I have tried and failed with since elementary school. I tried everything to understand the lessons we had, but I don't understand almost everything! Specifically, HTML; in 8th grade, our final lesson for the quarter was HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language. We have been tasked with creating our own website. HTML is very complicated because there are too many codes to use; one incorrect code disrupts everything.

I worried over which strand to choose. I began to doubt whether I could make it or not.

However, it wasn't till I began taking the strand I had heretofore overlooked and had a contextualized subject, which is Empowerment Technologies, that I began to overcome everything I had struggled with.

’ll share with you something I've learned over one semester of my first year as a Senior High School student in a contextualized subject called Empowerment Technologies:

1. Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology

Everything has perks and downsides, notably technology, which is something we are conditioned to live with in today's generation. I took in everything our teacher said about this particular lesson. When I say that technology has helped us get this far, I am not trying to lie; however, it is also slowly negatively impacting us.

2. Information and Communication Technology

ICT strives for a unified mode of communication. To find, save, send, and edit information. Web 1.0, Web 2.0, and Web 3.0 are the current states of ICT. This lesson includes an overview of ICT trends, in which I learned about the six types of social media and the various types of mobile technology. Convergence, social media, mobile technology, and assistive media are the four components of ICT trends.

3. Netiquette

When it comes to today's technologies, particularly social media, where more people are open about themselves, there are the do's and don'ts. Sharing information about yourself with others can be exciting, but it can also be terrifying. Social media has a lot to say about how we should be ourselves, what we should do, and what we shouldn't do. Social media can be a dangerous place because it is full of unknown people, people you haven't met yet. However, despite its description as dangerous, let us be kind and respectful to everyone we meet. Let us be open-minded, and when it comes to sharing information, let us base it on facts and credible sources.

4. MS Word

Microsoft Word has a lot to offer, especially to us students who are in a situation widely recognized as a pandemic. There's a lot to learn, but perhaps I consider this the most valuable lesson for me. Since I knew very little about MS Word, I learned a lot with the great assistance of my teacher, and I am confident that it will be pretty helpful to me in the future.

5. MS Excel

If I'm not misremembering, this was one of the computer lessons in 7th grade where I also tried and failed the most. Again, with the guidance of my teacher, Sir Jonash. I'm now familiar with the components and functions of Microsoft Excel, as well as how to create a formula for computing grades or data.

6. Powerpoint

powerpoint, mentioning Leila Cabrera, my partner; we were tasked with creating a simple powerpoint about a short story. We were working in our powerpoint until 10 p.m., which was hilarious because we both knew nothing about creating a powerpoint. We were only 12 years old when she joined me at my grandmother's house! How amazing is this subject? After learning such advanced presentation skills and creating an effective presentation, we were able to create our own powerpoint, not just a simple one, but an amazing one, without staying up too late.

7. HyperText Markup Language

To be honest, this is the most difficult! It may appear simple, but it is not. When I was in eighth grade, we were assigned to create our own webpage, which was embarrassing because it was a group project, but we were unable to complete it because we knew nothing about it. We almost got a lower grade, but we're glad we didn't. Again, with the assistance of our teacher, I was able to pass and present my webpage on time. It was difficult to create, but also a wonderful experience. There were a lot of mistakes and failures along the way, but I still made it to the top!

Empowerment technologies have a lot to offer me, and all Senior High School students. We managed to create a handful of activities that will leave us with fond memories and experiences to remember. My favorite activities were:

#1 Vlog

Since I used to be a historian at my old school, I am very fond of vlogging and taking videos as well as pictures. It's remarkably similar to saving moments that we want to relive. This activity made my affectionate heart sing once more.

A week with me (^.^)

#2 Blog

Writing itself is another means of expressing yourself and your feelings. This activity taught me to be creative and expressive about how I feel and what I want the rest of the world to know about me. This is a wonderful task.

SoulPerspective

#3 Infographics

My former classmates and teacher used to tell me that I am incredibly creative in everything I do. This activity involving the creation of infographics improved my creative self.

How did I made it happen? —

Fear and doubt, I believe, made me stronger than I was before. It drives me to perseverance; to keep going despite every thought that makes me doubt myself and what I can do.

I may not be the best at this subject, but I know I've done better over the years.

Nothing is impossible once you believe in yourself, your dreams, and the things you know you might do.

“’If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
