My name is Julie Hess and I grew up near a Swedish town called Kingsburg in California. I was studying to become a historian, and discovered a love for Nordic Art along that journey.

Valentine’s Day dates back to the Middle Ages, but wasn’t celebrated in the Nordic Countries until the 1900’s. The United States brought Valentine’s Day traditions to Sweden via trade, and in Sweden it is now known as Alla Hjärtans Dag (All heart’s day). According to Nordiska Museet’s webpage titled “Alla Hjärtans Dag,” Valentine’s Day in Sweden is celebrated by the giving of flowers (especially roses) and each rose has a different meaning depending on its color.
