Welcome to Teton Valley Doula
Providing women with the support they so deeply deserve
Whether you’re pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or you’re seeking education before you embark on your motherhood journey, I’m glad you’re here.
I’m Joanna, a birth and postpartum doula located in Teton Valley, Idaho. My mission is to serve women during Matrescence: the physical, emotional, hormonal, and social transition to becoming a mother.
Why? Because women deserve more support during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum season.
Most expecting mothers focus on preparing for their birth and don’t prepare for their postpartum season. What we often forget is that it’s not only a baby who is born, but a mother, too. While it is important to prepare for your birth, learn about your pregnancy, your growing baby, seek out childbirth and newborn education, it’s also important to ensure that you, the mother, will be supported during your 4th trimester.
Superwoman, supermom, “she does it all”, hustle culture, inadequate maternity and postpartum care, lack of a village - sound familiar? It’s what leads so many new moms feeling inadequate, anxious, and depressed. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
We were never meant to do this alone! Years ago, women had support systems in their village, they had ancestral wisdom from their grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, cousins. These women would guide them through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum season. The new mother would rest and nurture her baby while her village would feed and care for her family. While the new mother held her baby, her community held her. That’s right, no working, no laundry, no cooking, no errands, just bonding with your baby. I know this is not attainable for every woman in todays world, but that does not mean you should go without much deserved support!
Maybe you have a wonderful village, or maybe your village is lacking. Either way, doulas are here to provide women with individualized care.
🌷So, what is a doula?
“Doula” is a Greek word meaning “someone who serves”. Today you may hear it described as someone who mothers the mother.
🌷 Why should you work with a doula?
Because who doesn’t need more support and love in their life? I’ve never heard a mom say she had “too much” support during her 4th trimester!
🤰Birth doulas provide continuous physical, emotional, and educational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Your birth doula will spend time with you during your pregnancy to get to know you, your desires, provide childbirth education, draft birth preferences, practice advocating, and more. Your doula will also support the entire family during this transition - especially the birth partner during labor.
👩🍼 Postpartum doulas provide ongoing support to the new mother, with a focus on her healing, making her recovery a top priority during a transformative and delicate time. This is a time where many women find themselves overwhelmed and under-supported. Did you know the first 40 days of your postpartum season will impact the next 40 years of your life - mind, body, and soul?
🌷 Who am I?
I’m Joanna, though anyone from my childhood would call me Katie, my nick-name. I’m a Southern girl living in Idaho with my husband and daughter. 🙋🏻♀️ I’m the one who prepared for her birth and not her postpartum season. My mission is to help moms find the support they need.
When I’m not supporting a mama, you can find me at the thrift store, sipping a seltzer while rowing our drift boat, binge watching Grey’s Anatomy, or spending time with my family and friends.
