How to burn your candle?
Customers often ask: Why does my candle burn a hole right down the center?
Just follow these tips and you'll be good to go!
It is normal for your candles to burn a hole down. However, be sure to melt the wax pool as close to the rim as possible. So that it doesn't leave a big chunk of unmelted wax rim.
Don’t burn your candle for a short period of time. These candles are designed to burn for long periods of time: at least 3-4 hours each time you light it. If the flame is too large, it means the wick needs a trim.
We recommend that you do not burn your candle in a hurricane lamp or similar enclosed candleholders as they may hold in the heat and your candle could become soft or melt through the sides and spill wax.
Candle Care Tips: The initial burn
Burn the candle until the wax pool reaches near the edge of the candle (this takes at least 3-4 hours) the first time you light it. This is to maximise the size of the burn pool which determines the life of your candle. Subsequent burns won't melt the wax beyond the initial wax pool, so be sure to melt the wax close enough to the edge of the candle but not all the way. This is to prevent spillage of wax.
Candle Care Tips: Keeping distance
Place lit candles at least 10cm apart to avoid melting, dripping and warping due to heat from neighbouring candles.
Candle Care Tips: Draughts
Candles burn best in still air, always burn your candles away from drafts, vents or string air currents. If a draughts can't be avoided, try shielding the flame from the draughts and turn the candle periodically to avoid uneven burning.
Candle Care Tips: Storage
Candles are sensitive to temperature. Prevent candles from fading, cracking and melting by storing your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, dust and fluorescent light. Store your candles in an upright position.
Candle Care Tips: Tunneling
When a candle burns hollow, or leaves a thick rim of unused candle, this is referred to as 'tunnelling'. The cons of tunnelling is that you'll end up throwing away a large part of your candle as the rim won't melt away.
It can be avoided by making sure the initial burn is long enough to melt the candle all the way to the edge to create a big enough wax pool. As a rule of thumb, burn your pillar candle for 1 hour per 2cm in diameter the first time you light it.
However, if you fail to avoid tunnelling, there is a way to fix it! This technique is called 'hugging' - pushing the soft wax rim at the top of the candle inwards towards the flame, so that it has a chance to melt.
