We are the Families of the Kirkstone Neighbourhood

We are the Families of the Kirkstone Neighbourhood, in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver.

We acknowledge and honour that we live and work on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish people. Including the St'at'imc, Sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We are asking that the District of North Vancouver invest in our community by adding an all age friendly Community Playground to Kirkstone Park. We need your support! Please contact the district and tell them why a Playground will benefit you.

Playground at Kirkstone Park

To the District of North Vancouver,

The Kirkstone Neighbourhood is requesting a Children’s Playground to be added to Kirkstone Park. Kirkstone Park is the hub of our neighbourhood, which includes a grass/turf field, skateboard park, multi-use path, forest, as well as a near by rec-center and elementary school. However, a child-friendly playground for all ages, which is a fundamental aspect in creating a family centered community, has been overlooked. The closest playground to our area is Viewlynn Park, which can be difficult to walk to with young children and is often crowded.

The addition of a community playground to Kirkstone Park will provide a multitude of benefits for families in the surrounding area, which includes several neighbourhoods of single-family homes as well as various complexes, town houses, and apartment buildings. This would also benefit families that attend the park for sporting events from across the lower mainland.

Playgrounds are the heart of a community and an indispensable safe gathering space that can benefit everyone. Community playgrounds provide children the opportunity to practice and develop skills through free play. Children are constantly learning through play—making new friends, sharing, taking turns, and interacting with other children. This interaction that occurs during playground-based play gives them a more open view of the world and the opportunity to build new relationships. Perhaps above all, playgrounds are a simple joy that is a cherished part of childhood. Please help us make this dream a reality for our neighbourhood.

Community Playgrounds Build Important Skills

• Cognitive – When kids interact and explore on community playgrounds, they have the opportunity to problem-solve, think critically, and plan strategically. Children gain self-confidence and increased self-esteem when they master an activity that was previously challenging.

• Physical – Climbing, swinging, jumping, and running leads to increased cardiovascular health and strength. Playgrounds also help improve balance, agility and hand/eye coordination. Outside play also helps to boost mood, reduce stress, and increase happiness.

• Social – Community playgrounds offer opportunities for kids to collaborate and engage with each other to overcome challenges. Playgrounds help to bring people together and create a sense of belonging for the community as a whole.

• Sensory – Using more than one sense – sight, hearing, touch – helps build a child’s developing brain more quickly. Playgrounds also help to develop creativity and imagination by promoting free play.

Thank you for your time and consideration of our proposal.
