My Top Pick Arts

These art pieces is chosen by Sophia Mangubat.

Visual Arts (Noli Me Tangere)

This art is a masterpiece that represents the hardships that our ancestors faced. We have to recognize that it is part of the past and it is what made us, Filipinos, stronger. Jose Rizal is a genius for making this novel because it enabled us to look back and be better to make our future stronger. Rizal wrote it for us to have the knowledge and provide us a part of Filipinos’ history where they claimed and embraced their freedom. It is also a symbol that a pen and a paper is as strong as physical strength and force.

Music Arts (Dapat Tama by Gloc 9)

It is obvious in the song “Dapat Tama,” that it is about awakening people in our nation and reminding them to do the right thing and to not be blinded by the flowery words of the politicians. The line that truly marked my heart is the “Nasa atin ang kapangyarihan pag tayo ang kumibo” which means that the power is with us, the citizens, during the election and not the candidates. So it is right and just that we take pride and be responsible in voting for those who are really qualified to take charge and provide good governance.

Soul Making

Our world is now in the modern day. Many things have changed and it will continue to change in fast paced motion. Attached to it are the positive and negative changes that we experience. I decided to pinpoint the negative effects that’s happening worldwide which are Social Media Addiction and Misinformation. Social media addiction has a very huge impact on a person’s capacity to develop. Nowadays, even a toddler can operate a touch screen cellphone because it is used to keep them entertained. Yes it has its benefits to the parents and children, but too much of it causes harmful effects on a child’s brain. And this doesn't only apply to children but to adults too.

Misinformation has been a trend now since almost all of us are on social media. Interacting and talking to people on social media sites is the first option when it comes to socializing. Some people believe immediately on what they see as long as the title and graphics are inviting and controversial. Books are now lies and it’s so sad for the young people to be exposed to unreliable sources instead of turning the pages and looking for the answer word by word. It does not work like that anymore. Media literacy should be taught, that's why I drew this art.

Visual Arts (Crisis in Humanity)

The art of crisis in humanity of Ben Cabrera can help in shaping the modern world by giving an awareness to people that by having a massive situation it may have an enourmous impact especially to people who are vulnerable. From this, we should be mindful of our actions, considerate and most important being kind to others because all of us are encountering struggles in life.

Music Arts (We Heal as One)

"We Heal as One helps me in this pandemic that every trial that I will encounter in the future, I should not give uo because everything will be worth it soon. I know that all my efforts will have a better outcome. Furthermore, I should always be grateful because I have the people around me who support me and guide me.

Soul Making

It inspired me to use my ability to speak up my voice through this art because I know that by simply showing the care that I have for our planet, I can make people understand to be a person who is knowledgeable enough to know the things that they must do to protect the place that we are living in today.

Visual Arts (Bayanihan)

Carlos “Botong” Francisco, the poet of Angono born on November 4, 1912, is well-known as the National Artist For Painting in 1973. He died on March 31, 1969. He was invariably linked with the “modernist” artists and was known in the local art circles as “The Triumvirate.” Botong’s
unerring eye for composition, the lush tropical sense of color, and abiding faith in the folk values typified by the townspeople of Angono.

One of the Carlos Francisco artworks is the "BAYANIHAN". The artwork means being a bayan and has been used to refer to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. He used a 62.5 x 47.5 cm canvas and a watercolor. The artwork expresses itself, and it displays Filipino attributes by following their old tradition of helping their neighbors in relocating, getting enough volunteers to carry the entire house, and transferring to another location. This artwork, "Bayanihan," inspires millions of people in the Philippines and the whole world. This shows how individuals all over the world may come together to help one another and work toward a shared goal without bringing others down.

The title was derived from the root word Bayani, which means hero. It shows the actual definition of heroism by starting with oneself and then moving on to others in your area or community. Life can be like the bamboo sticks used to move house. They show how strong people can be in dealing with their problems or burdens in life. Besides, the Bahay Kubo or house represents what the problems or burdens are. Each man carries a small part of the weight of the house, which shows that everyone can be a hero. As a result, each man becomes a hero since he tends to help others.

This artwork of Carlos Francisco's "Bayanihan" reflects the reality of what he wants to show in life, especially amidst this pandemic. People showed their uniqueness in their ways of being a hero by helping others who were in desperate need of help during this pandemic. This art shows the artist's masterpiece that moved millions of people in the sense of helping one another through what Bayanihan symbolizes.

Music Arts (Isang Lahi)

The song "Isang Lahi" is a pop song composed by Vehnee Saturno and was sung by Regine Velasquez. The song was released in 1987. Pop music has a good rhythm and a catchy melody and is easy to remember and sing. The song is about being united as one amidst our differences. In the Philippines, a lot of Filipinos suffer from poverty. These people's voices are being neglected.

Regine Velasquez is one of the most popular singers in the country. Her magnetic, powerful voice gives the messages that the song wants to convey. The music will surely give courage and feel the love and sincerity of others. The song also wants us to feel that love is one of the greatest things on here and that all Filipinos are united as one.

The lyrics tell us to offer love to everyone because we are Filipinos, and we have only one race. The melody of the song is dramatic; however, it seems like begging us to be one as a sign of respect to our country, which is the Philippines. Instead of judging one another, why should every one of us show love and respect to our fellowmen? The song "Isang Lahi" is to spread hope, unity, and love to achieve a wonderful place to live in full of harmony, respect, and love with one another with our fellow Filipinos. The song also tells us not to lose hope because there will be sunshine after the storm. If only we learn to spread love and sincerity to help one another, we will achieve a common goal for a better future for our country. Despite our differences and beliefs, everyone should learn to accept our individualities to promote a peaceful way of living for the prosperity of our nation. United as one, we can all do it by loving one another by sharing the love for humankind.

This song helped a lot in times of pandemic because of the messages it within the song wants to convey. To help one another, show love and respect, and be united as one for being a Filipino. The idea is to heal every heart and never lose hope. In between those messages, from the hurt to the pain, to the despair, to the healing to the faith in God, it will be the triumph of overcoming this pandemic.

Soul Making

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) persons continue to endure pervasive stigma, exclusion, and discrimination throughout the world, particularly in school, employment, health care, and within their homes and communities. Many LGBTQ people are beaten, sexually assaulted, tortured, and killed due to targeted physical attacks and extreme violence. Legal recognition of transgender people's gender identity is not available in most countries, and those who do have access are subject to oppressive criteria to achieve it. The human rights of intersex children and adults may be violated if they are forced or pressured to undergo medically unnecessary procedures.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people want equal rights, not special rights. Regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and loved in an intimate relationship. People still have a hard time realizing that love comes in all shapes and sizes and that it doesn't have any labels. Couples of the same sex are sometimes derided as being unnatural. I find it infuriating to be against love because of gender. No matter what race, gender, or label, love is love!

People should be able to love without the fear of being judged. Love has no sexuality, race, skin tone, or gender. Love is something special between two people. The feeling of love is indescribable; words can barely explain the feeling. Their sexual choice does not determine who they are as a person. They are just regular people who love.

No one has the right to discriminate against or bully another person or hurt them emotionally or physically. They deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and compromise. At the end of the day, you should love whoever you want because no one should be able to dictate who to love.

Visual Arts (Grayground by Ronald Ventura)

Ventura is a contemporary artist from Manila, with a Bachelor’s degree of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Santo Tomas. He initially taught in the same school after graduating but found his true calling as a visual artist after his first solo exhibition at the Drawing Room in Makati in 2000.
Ventura’s work is known to consist of multiple layers, using imagery that focuses on the human form. His paintings are a dramatic union of comic sketches, reality, and graffiti. He draws inspiration from Asian mythology, Catholicism, science fiction and comic book characters.
In Ventura's multilayered painting entitled Grayground(2011), the fusion between the physical and metaphysical realms is made possible. The recurring theme of Platonic or metaphysical fall is magnificently interacted with the images of robotics and modern technology.

Ventura uses graphite, acrylic and oil on canvas.
For the artist. Ventura mentioned that he takes the layering process in his work as a metaphor for the multifaceted identity of the Philippines. For me, it shows the growth of our technology. It shows the old way to the modern technology because of the way he did with it. It has multiimages that needs to focus with to know the underlying meaning of it.
In the times of pandemic, with this artwork, it made me realize that life continuously to grow. It never stops it just pushes everyone to adapt to the new things that was discovered to make sure we are moving forward and comfortable. Very timely in the pandemic that when everyone stops we still look on something to look forward to.
Because of Grayground (2011), He is known to have the highest selling work in the history of the Southeast Asian art market: his painting Grayground sold for a whopping $1.1 million USD at an auction in Sotheby’s Hong Kong. In which modern contemporary artist can look up to. It will shape their mindset to do more works better to make the modern world more comfortable to look at and much lightly to take thru the artworks that will be made.

Soul Making (Women empowerment)

Women empowerment can be defined to promoting women's sense of self worth, their ability to determine their own choices, and their right to influence social change for themselves and others. But despite a great deal of progress, women and girls continue to face discrimination and violence in every part of the world.
This mirror that I made it gives voice to womanhood. We are often named as “babae kalang” “maganda kalang” “mahina”. It is hard to accept and unfortunate that up until this moment these words are still being thrown to women. No matter what the achievement is and no matter how we try we are still hearing it. This mirror was exclusively made to empower women. Make women feel that no matter the appearance or no matter what you see in the mirror it is not the reflection of what you are and what is your capabilities.

I always look in the mirror to see and make myself look confident and powerful. I am into putting make up on my face. Some might say that I am always well groomed to the point that they always say that it is the only thing that I can do. They don’t know that it doesn’t only gives me the confidence but it gives me the inner power I need that I can surpass a day and influence other women.
But again, a reflection of one’s internal beauty surpasses the exact thing you see in the front of the mirror. And no matter how hard, be proud that we are women. Women that gives birth, gives life, gives love and we are never less. When women are living safe, fulfilled and productive lives, they can reach their full potential. contributing their skills to the workforce and can raise happier and healthier children. And we can say in the front of this mirror that we are “Salamin ng bukas”.

Music Arts (Rainbow by Kacey Munsgraves)

This past few weeks, I feel so lost. I feel like I keep on trying to achieve things that is really hard to get. Obstacles that I have to surpass and silent battles that I need to overcome. But,when I heard the song “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves, I feel like this song is for me. A song that can make me feel the warmth nd calmness I am truly looking for.

“Rainbow” was composed and released by Kacey Musgraves last May 2018. Rainbow" originally began as an encouraging note that Kace was inspired to write for herself after reading her horoscope. It later served as the final song Musgraves’ grandmother heard her write, one she loved so dearly, it was performed at her funeral. Now it’s transformed into a message of hope for anyone in the midst of dark times.

The lyrics that captured my heart is “Hold tight to your umbrella, well darlin' I'm just trying to tell ya, that there's always been a rainbow hanging over your head.” It clearly shows how empathetic this song could be. A very heartfelt lyrics with the piano music in the background. 'ainbow was the beginning of me turning that around and being kind to myself. It is a reminder that I can make it through anything. I hope this song exudes hope and self-love, because each of us deserves it.

Lastly, the part that says “When it rains, it pours. But you didn't even notice it ain't rainin' anymore” it gives me hope. Hope that no matter what we are facing now how deep the emotion is, one day you will notice that it is no longer affecting you and you already have surpass it. Sometimes failure doesn’t really mean failure it only means redirection. Always be kind to yourself because like the rainbow, there’s always light after the rain.

Visual Arts (SABEL)

Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera was born to Democrito Cabrera and Isabel Reyes in Malabon, Philippines on April 10, 1942. He is more popularly known and is widely hailed as a master of contemporary Philippine art. He was the youngest of nine children BenCab's first exposure and discovery of the arts happened through his elder Brother Salvador, who was already an established artist during Bencab's childhoodSalvador or “Bading” would be Ben’s lifelong inspiration. He went on to study at the University of the Philippines DilimanHe received his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1963. Sabel was the name of a homeless vagrant who wandered around Ben’s Bambang neighborhood, scavenged for food and clothing from trash bins, and wrapped herself with throwaway plastic sheets to protect herself from the elements. Ben was fascinated by the shimmering shapes and volumes that billowed whenever Sabel walked, and she became the focus of his camera.

It was through Sabel that Ben learned to bend both the traditional dictates of figurative painting with the modern sensibility in which his art was done. This meant abstracting the form of Sabel by focusing on her plastic clothes as overlapping, jerky planes that were surrounded by lines of movement—like the “zoom” lines following a cartoon superhero. This as heightened by playing on the contrast between dark background and bright coloration of her forms to emphasize depth and contrast, classical rules of composition that seamlessly blended with the need for abstraction and sublimation symbolized by her sashaying movement, and the translucent sleeves that looked like Cubist put-ons .Benedicto Cabrera; Sabel, 2003; 102 x 76 cm. Description: Benedicto Cabrera . His paintings are infused with vigorous rhythmic brush strokes, flowing lines, and spirited body movements.

Bencab was inspired by a real-life woman, who travels places and begs for food, that he pictured and sketched in 1965. It was Bencab's neighborhood when he was in bambang st. Santa Cruz manila. Sabel was the name of a homeless vagrant who wandered around Ben’s Bambang neighborhood, scavenged for food and clothing from trash bins, and wrapped herself with throwaway plastic sheets to protect herself from the elements. For me the art was a girl that wrapped herself with paper, with big problems in her life. The girl in the paintings shows that she needs help.

There were conflicting emotions. I'm saddened because many of us may relate with Sabel's situation during the pandemic. Many of us are struggling to make ends meet; some have lost employment, and others have lost loved ones. This pandemic has had a significant impact on our lives, and I'm sure many of us can relate to Sabel's predicament. I also feel good because, thankfully, I have never had to deal with Sabel's scenario; I am at peace because, despite the hardships caused by the pandemic, I am still able to eat decent food and dress nicely.

By influencing public opinion, imparting values, and transmitting human experience over time and place, this work is molding the modern world. We were able to express ourselves through this creative form. The art speaks about a wide range of emotions, which encourages us to express our feelings. This also allows us to reflect on society and the issues that matter to us, as well as the world we live in.

Music Arts (Pakiusap)

PAKIUSAP
By Francisco Santiago

Pakiusap is a timeless kundiman contemporary song composed by Francisco Santiago. Francisco Santiago, the Father of Kundiman Art Song, was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, to musically inclined peasant parents Felipe and Maria Santiago. Francisco Santiago is today's most well-known Filipino composer. His kundiman "Anak Dalita" and "Pakiusap" are staples of Filipino vocalists' styles and genres today. Francisco Santiago composed "Pakiusap," which means "Plead." It's another example of kundiman, but it also contains haranas, or serenades, from Spain. Santiago has picked Jesus Balmori's poetry. A besotted serenader sings to his sweetheart of his undying love for her till he dies. He begs her to open her window and feel sorry for him. Despite the fact that this work does not explicitly mention revolution, we can understand how this suitor's pleadings may be construed as more than just a serenade. This unwavering affection is comparable to love for one's homeland. This suitor swears to defend his love, despite all the other suitors' hollow promises and aspirations. His pleadings and pledges might be seen as metaphors for colonial power conflict. . He wrote this to express how much he loves the girl and is prepared to go to any length to make her like him. He is begging and asking for her to accept him into her life, pleading for sympathy and professing his love. This was my first time hearing this song, and I'm glad I was able to listen to it because it's great, not just in terms of the message but also in terms of the tone. I can relate to this song because I'm sure there will come a time in my life when I'll plead for a girl, begging for love.. This song will bring me serenity and peace during this outbreak, where there is so much chaos. I hope that everyone has the opportunity to hear this masterpiece.

Soul Making

In my week 4 I made a display by using second hand wood and branches of trees.  Also I used a glue gun to attach the branches and paint a sun in the wood to be the highlights of the trees.  The name of my masterpiece is "The Future '',I called it the future because it represents the future of the earth when we continue our doings that can destroy our planet.Such as burning our garbage plastics, cutting trees,  many factories etc. We must stop this to avoid the future that showed in my masterpiece. Lets save Earth!!

Visual Arts (SPOLIARIUM Juan Luna (1884)

SPOLIARIUM Juan Luna (1884)

􏰀 It illustrates two dead gladiators being dragged by Romans at the center. On the left, scavengers eye the dead men’s possessions while a Roman beside them raises a fist in protest. A woman mourns a loved one on the right side while an old man searches for a body amid the smoky haze. The depiction of Roman cruelty in the painting has been interpreted as an allegory for the state of the Philippines under Spanish rule. The Spoliarium is a painting by Filipino painter Juan Luna. Luna, working on canvas, spent eight months completing the painting which depicts dying gladiators. The
painting was submitted by Luna to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it garnered the first gold medal. The material used in the art is Oil paint & Oil paint wood. Spoliarium, the paint, shows how the Filipinos were treated before when they were colonized by Spaniards. ... He actually indicated the purpose of Juan Luna for painting Spoliarium which is painted to awaken Filipinos from ignorance, blindness, mental darkness and oppressions The artist values his work because he uses it to awaken his Country. Become aware of what is going on when we are being colonized by the Aliens. It's significant for him
since he wants to inform the Filipinos about the Spaniards. stuff that the Spaniards are abusing us for, and it's quite cruel When I viewed this artwork of one Luna, I felt a variety of emotions: happy, sad, and Confused. Bereavement, grief, and surprise You can sense everything in the painting just looking at It. staring at it because of the black, red, and brown color hues it Reveals the painting's ethnicity and realism, Those gladiators slaves are being dragged after losing a fight for the sole purpose of amusement. It feels good to know that there are people that genuinely care about this Country. They will go to any length to inform or awaken the Filipinos about what is going on in their country. I feel better knowing that the majority of Filipinos are Educated. Ignorance and blindness are prevalent these days, particularly in the current situation.(Election), knowing that Filipinos are stronger than they were before, fighting for what they believe In. They owned and were aware of the events taking place in our country.

Music Arts (UPUAN)

UPUAN - Gloc 9

􏰀The upuan song is an indictment of government officials who act for personal gain. instead of focusing on what people say they'll do when they get Paid, I believe Glock was inspired by this because not many of us are strong enough to do It. challenging the government, the song says it all, yet this does not apply to Everyone. In the Philippines, governance refers to the individuals who wish to have Something. this kind of power for their own benefit. ◦I believe this song is intended to remind Filipinos that we have been trodden by this Government. People and we need to wake up to what they will do; it will always be a Struggle. Because, to be honest, sometimes people desire to make things right is a reminder Being destroyed by those in positions of power is a fact that we must Face. Therefore, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and this will continue until we stop It. did not act properly It assists me in fact-checking or browsing current events in our country, particularly in our Region. Because we are having an election in the midst of a pandemic, almost everyone is Voting. on the facts or what they observed when surfing or fact-checking someone People know who to vote for, but that will not be enough to destroy the Powerful. Somebody solely cares about themselves, but this is one of the steps to destroying them.as well as having a good country.

Soul Making (#SaveTheEarth)

#SaveTheEarth

I made this drawing to represent the pollution that the world gains from the work of men. it also shows how dirty our world is and it will get worse if we can't anticipate it and we don't have any action to take to help our world. So, we should be concerned that since we are also the ones who will be poor in the end, we should limit the factories and vehicles that are having a bad effect on our world and we should also reduce the use of plastic and replace it with paper. so that it does not add to the destruction of our world. as a simple person you can help a lot, you can plant different plants and trees and stop cutting trees. because nowadays there are very few of them, it is a big help to reduce the pollution that our world gets, I chose it because it is one of the most important problems of our country that should be addressed and should not be ignored

VISUAL ARTS (CRISIS IN HUMANITY)

This masterpiece affects me on being ready in every situation that will happen because we do not know what will happen on the next day or two. We were particularly affected by the humanitarian crisis at the time. This artwork reminds us of our bright side during terrible days. And being grateful for it and appreciate the small things we have, because some people are truly suffering during this epidemic, and some people can't eat three times a day, and the worst are starving to death due to the pandemic's unemployment.

MUSIC ARTS (Sa hindi pag-alala)

The song convey that we generally fell in love harder with someone who doesn't love us the way we love them, and we told ourselves to forget that person; you're waiting for signs, but when they arrive, you always close your eyes because you still don't have the strength to forget that person. You will also go on in that suffering; always believe in yourself, and there this that can accompany us on our road of moving on. The wisest thing we can do in this life is to move on/forward. Not for the sake of anybody else, but for our own. It’s difficult to let go, especially if they become your happiness. We can't do anything; we'll only be destroyed if we try harder. Sometimes the person we need the most is the one we are better without. Before Covid-19 happen, there is a person in our school whom we really admire.

Soul Making
