About Us

What We Do And What We Stand For

Last year, I noticed how many hamsters were being sold on Craigslist in tiny cages below 450 square inches (the bare minimum) with under six inches of bedding and a less than eight inch wheel. So I decided to do something. By providing hamsters with large cages and enrichment items, the Rescue has helped many hamsters find forever homes!

Proper Hamster Care

Most hamsters are kept in small, plastic cages with a small wheel and low quality food. Where do they get this horrible care? Pet stores. Now you may be wondering, why would pet stores want to give so many pets such ba care? Well, these days, most pet store owners only care about the money they can make off small pets, their cages, and the people that buy animals and their cages. Pet stores get their animals from rodent mills, facilities that provide only the basic needs for animals. Several years ago, puppy mills became exposed. Think about the same kind of thing people do to those puppies and you're somewhere int he general range of what rodent mills do to small animals. Some animals have been so hungry that they've eaten each other! The one thing rodent mills care about: money. A few weeks after their birth, the hamster are transported to the pet store, separated by gender and put in quarantine cages. After quarantine, the hamsters are put in display tanks, the small glass tanks where costumers can view the animal. They are kept in very small, overcrowded cages with little to no bedding and one hide to share. After they have been bought, they are kept in 100-300 square inch cages. These are too small and do not provide the hamster with enough enrichment to burrow and hide. Instead, buying a 450+ cage, adding an 8+ inch wheel, enrichment items and a soft paper bedding piled high will be better!
