LITTLE DOULA ON THE PRAIRIE

H E L L O

W E L C O M E & Thank-you for stopping by my page. Odds are your a birth lover or about to have a baby yourself, either or, I’m glad to have you here !

I’m Kristy. A wife, a mother & creator of Little Doula on the Prairie. I began living the doula life in 2017 to support women during birth and to meet the growing need for labor support in our community. After the birth of my first daughter I really felt there was gap's in the care that 100% needed to be filled to ensure women felt they were completly supported during their birth experience.

I provide birth doula services to all women who decide to birth in Wainwright, Viking, Camrose & Edmonton & surrounding areas.

A woman’s memories of her birth experiences last a lifetime and can have powerful effects on her self esteem and confidence. I am committed to helping women and couples feel empowered and supported as they experience birth.

It is my mission to help mothers learn to trust in their beautiful, strong bodies and to trust in birth.

The moment that a baby is born is joyous, magical, and wondrous, and it is my wish for mothers and their partners to experience the birth of their babies as fully as possible. As important it is to have healthy happy babies it is just important to have healthy and happy mothers.

I will work hard to support you and your family through your birth so that you feel confident, informed, and surrounded with care, love and respect.

Enjoy looking around the page! I look forward to connecting with you!

LITTLE DOULA ON THE PRAIRIE

SO.. WHAT IS A DOULA?

WHAT IS A DOULA ?
A birth doula is a companion who supports a birthing person during labor and birth. Birth doulas are trained to provide continuous, one-on-one care, as well as information, physical support, and emotional

They are trained to seamlessly fill the gaps where continuous one on one, non medicinal care to is needed to their clients. They allow the Nurses, midwives or doctors to provide medical care to the birthing mother and baby when needed.

Doulas work hard for the mother. They are strong, cool under pressure, have special training, and big patient hearts. As such, doulas should be viewed by both parents and providers as an incredibly valuable, evidence-based member of the birth care team

WHAT DOES A DOULA DO?

• They work for the client not the hospital
• Provide emotional & physical support to mother & partner.
• Suggest natural comfort measures
• Provide assistance in acquiring evidence based  knowledge necessary to help mother and partner make informed decisions.
• Advocate for the clients wishes that she has expressed in her birth plan
• Helping to create a calm environment
Create space to encourage clients to ask questions, express preferences and concerns to their care provider.
• Help mother incorporate changes in her birth plan, if and when needed.
• Enhance communication between communication between client and care provider.
• Refer clients to any needs they may have outside my scope & training

WHAT A DOULA DOES NOT DO:

• They do not perform clinical tasks such as vaginal exams or fetal heart monitoring
• They do not give medical advice or diagnose conditions
• They do not make decisions for the client (medical or otherwise)
• They do not pressure the birthing person into certain choices just because that’s what they prefer
• They do not take over the role of the partner
• They do not catch the baby
• They do not change shifts (although some doulas may call in their back-up after 12-24 hours)

WHAT ARE THE STATS?

• 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
• 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
• 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
• Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average
• 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score
• 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
