The Story of the #tinycollage
How Trash Became Treasure
The word remnant is defined as, "an unused part, something leftover, a surviving trace, or remains." We might consider them castoffs, scraps, or unwanted pieces left after what was useful had been taken. It is these tiny leftover pieces that make up my #tinycollages. I started collecting little pieces of trash off my desk once I realized many of them were too pretty to throw away. I had no idea what what to do with them, but I could not just toss them. Then one day I happened upon Roben Marie Smith's tutorial, "Art Bit Clips: A Video Tutorial," where she was adorning bulldog clips with tiny, layered, stitched bits of paper. I followed along, pulling some pieces from my envelope full of painted scraps. I fell instantly in love with the idea of using these little beautiful remnants! I remember the first time I started making my tiny collages and my daughter asked me what I was doing. I said, "Glueing pieces of trash to other pieces of trash!" She nodded her head like she wouldn't have expected anything less from me and we both laughed! When I stopped, I had made fifty #tinycollages in one sitting! I was hooked!
I've thought a lot about these tiny treasures. I realized they remind me of grace, mercy and redemption. I love when I see God move in a young person whose life is broken, tattered, torn and scarred and He redeems their life making them new. I've seen Him wipe their tears away, kiss their scars, and pick up each tiny piece of their shattered heart and put them back together in a beautiful way. Not one little bit is wasted . . . He reuses it all in His masterpiece, all the good, all the bad, repurposed into something truly unique and undeniably lovely. He creates something precious by redeeming the remnants that were left behind. He takes the ashes of our past and trades it for His beauty and grace. This is what has inspired these Tiny Collages. These little bits of paper that could have been deemed useless can be lovingly recreated into a thing of beauty in the creator's hands. These #tinycollages are a beautiful picture of the love of God.
