All That Good Stuff I Did Senior Year 2024

Lucia Martinez AP Portfolio Overview 2024

For this portfolio, I wanted to focus on connecting the themes of growing up undiagnosed with ADHD, a learning disorder, and severe anxiety with the experience of shelter animals, primarily dogs. I personally find myself relating to them rather strongly. In addition I wanted to push myself to explore the different styles I’ve experimented with in the past further. My questions were “how can I connect the experiences of shelter animals with undiagnosed childhood experiences, and how can this be expressed through my art?”

October 30th

Multimedia on paper.
Black cats are often adopted before Halloween, only to be dumped back at the shelter or worse.

Dumb Friendless League

Multimedia on Canvas
A comparison between the familiar Buddy Bench experience and the experience of a dog still waiting at the shelter. Both waiting for someone to give them a chance.

Sunrise

I always find that despite how long and painful the days get, me and my dog are always happy to see the sun rise before school.

Stray

Digital
Trying to take care of your inner child is like trying to pick up an injured stray with your bare hands. Painful.

Dangerous Breed

12x 8 multimedia on canvas
Many breeds are banned by law either in the US or in other countries. Most recently, England banned the breeding and free roaming of XL Bullies. Other breeds banned in other areas include the Belgian Malinois and Pitbull. Being excluded from peers from an early age due to unidentified neurodivergence and LGBTQ+ feels very similar to being “banned” from normal human connection.

Alien!

Multimedia on Eensy weensy canvas,
I often hear that people dislike hairless cats because of how strange and alien-like they look. In reality, they are sweet and affectionate cats. Tbh same. I wanted to push my physical painting skills a little, and although I don’t think I succeeded spectacularly, I will continue trying.

Dyscalculia

12” x 8 multimedia on canvas
I struggled through 10 years of math classes with undiagnosed dyscalculia. As a result, I felt like an absolute idiot and was even picked on because of this. I never thought that I’d be anything, do anything, or understand anything with math as a kid, so I’d simply ignore it. I’ve noticed that some dogs do the same with certain tricks they just cannot get the grasp of.
