What is Medical QiGong?
Medical Qigong is a holistic health care system that identifies the root causes of disease and uses energy as a conduit to facilitate healing. The Medical Qigong practitioner may prescribe exercises, meditations and healing practices tailored specifically to each patient with the goal of restoring health. As such, qigong acts as an excellent complement to Western medicine, or it may even be used exclusively to treat symptoms deemed resistant to Western medicine and/or prescription drugs.
How it works
The human body is a magnificent structure which possesses an enormous and persistent capacity to be self-healing. The ancient Chinese understood this phenomenon and developed Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and a series of energy guiding Qigong exercises to support our bodies’ natural ability to heal.
Qi translated as “life energy”, “life force”, or “energy flow” is the central underlying principle in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine asserts that the body has natural patterns of qi that circulate in channels called meridians. In TCM, symptoms of various illnesses are believed to be the product of disrupted, blocked, or unbalanced qi. Traditional Chinese medicine often seeks to relieve these imbalances by adjusting the circulation of qi using a variety of techniques including Qigong.
Qigong pronounced ‘chee’ ‘gung’ – is one of the four ancient Chinese medical practices involving coordinated breathing, movement, self-massage and awareness and used to cure disease and cultivate a healthy body and mind.
In order to understand how Qigong achieves this, imagine a garden hose – water flows freely if there are no obstructions in the hose. If there is a kink or constriction in the hose, water (Qi) doesn’t flow. You get excess (Qi) on one side of the kink and deficiency on the other. The stretching, movements and breathing of Qigong elongate the hose and release the blockages caused by trauma, stress, poor diet, medications, hereditary conditions, environmental factors or excessive emotional issues. This balanced even flow of energy or Qi assures the health of your organs, nerves, glands and cells by stimulating the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

What can you expect from a Medical QiGong session
Medical Qigong sessions typically last about one hour to an hour & a half. This may vary depending on the nature of the client’s condition, and/or other existing factors.
During the initial client interview, the Medical Qigong practitioner evaluates the clients physical, emotional, and energetic condition. Based on the information learned from this initial session, the practitioner may then prescribe a treatment program.
Treatment:
Since physical barriers do not impede the flow of qi, there is no need for the client to undress. Standing near the client, the Medical Qigong practitioner may be expected to gently touch key areas of the body to facilitate energy flow and promote healing. The purpose of the treatment is twofold:
1) to release qi blockages that represent the root cause of the ailment or disease
2) to restore qi flow, strengthen any deficiencies, and rejuvenate the body to a balanced state.
When stagnant or toxic energy is released, the client may experience sensations such as warmth, tingling, or even muscle twitching. These sensations represent qi as it flows throughout the body. Some may even feel a sudden emotional outpouring, as long-standing, harmful emotions are purged and qi is restored. Whatever the case, many find the treatments rejuvenating and highly beneficial.

Why practice QiGong
Health benefits of Qigong is a preventive and self-healing art which leads to self-awareness, tranquility, and harmony with nature. Through the practice of qigong the practitioner can control reactions to stress, reducing or eliminating such symptoms as high blood pressure, frustration, or anxiety. Qigong practice improves strength, stamina, coordination, speed, flexibility, balance, and resistance to injury.
Because qigong includes both dynamic and gentle techniques that can be practiced from standing, seated, or supine postures, it is suitable for young and old. Practices can be tailored to individual needs making it an ideal aid to recovery from illness or injury.
Prescriptions
As in Western medicine, the Medical Qigong practitioner may offer post-treatment prescriptions. However, rather than pharmaceuticals, the Medical Qigong practitioner prescribes exercises such as qigong meditation and/or dietary recommendations. Medical Qigong treatments also help patients by:

Maddie did a wonderful job making me feel comfortable. I enjoyed how she set the mood with the right relaxing music, and the right kind of Subtle smells that are not to over powering. As well she has real plants that make you feel you are outside in beautiful garden or forest. While getting the session I felt positive energy coming back into my body and mind as well as comfort. I enjoyed the session as a whole.
During the session I felt a sense of peace, understanding, and a release of negative energy. I also had issues with my ankle nerves and she was able to repair those. Lastly my back gets tense or sore from other things in life and she was able to bring it back to a state of comfort and flexibility.
Next few days I was able to think more clearly, under conflicts that arose, and get back to the sports and other activities I enjoy easily.

During my Medical QiGong session I feel so grounded and humbled. It really connects my body and my mind in a transcendent way. I feel like I am in a deep state of meditation that includes complete peace and sanity mentally. I feel like I am in nature when I am in this state and my emotions and spirituality become more clear. I feel my body relax and all stresses that I carry throughout my body are taken away. Any pain from injuries are relieved and just fade over. Everything that makes me tense and on edge are washed away. I feel toxins and bad energy I have been carrying being removed.
Days following a session I usually feel lighter and think clearer. My emotions are more abundant and I try to focus on being more positive and in touch with what’s going on throughout my day. I feel a deeper connection to my body physically and emotionally.

At the beginning of the session Maddie made me feel comfortable and explained what would be taking place. She asked me the problems I had been experiencing and made note of them to work on. The area she has set up is so peaceful and mindful. During the session I felt very relaxed and safe and at peace.
I told her beforehand that I had been experiencing headaches and she really worked on that area and totally relieved my headache. I haven't had one since then and it's been a few days. The first session I was having stomach problems and she worked on that too and it felt so much better.
I was pretty tired for the next couple of days which Maddie had told me would happen. After a couple of days my energy was replenished and I felt so amazing.
I had never heard of Qigong before Maddie telling me about it and it has been such an amazing experience and I can't wait for the next session!

My experience was very relaxing. I loved how Maddie explained how she would do each phase of the session so I had an idea of how everything would take place before, since I really didn’t know what QiGong was until now.
During the session, near the beginning, I started seeing some green color in the shape of rings. At the end of the session I felt my fingers twitching, which I thought was interesting.
After the session I felt my posture feel better. I had injured my tailbone so she casted my tailbone during the session.
I love how I was also taught some helpful things to do at home to work out my tight muscles.

My experience showed me how difficult it is to slow my racing thoughts and be still for 45 minutes. That said, I was able to focus on moments I experienced light or temperature sensations, in part because I was told to pay attention to those signals going into the session. I don’t think I felt any particular strong emotions or relief during or after the session, but perhaps it’s like building a new muscle and takes time/repetition.
Physically — was aware of full pain in my feet (arch and at the joints). I’ve developed plantars fasciitis. Slight warming in my torso, toes became increasingly cold over 45 minutes.
Truthfully, I was hard on myself and my body for being unable to be still or find some transformative calm during the session and in the days after. I had to just let it go eventually and get on with my schedule.
The session did prompt me to do more research about what the body manifests and how that is influenced by underlying conditions. I found a good ground exercise through the process of research that helps me identify stress patterns and process those reactions in the moment better
