The importance of being a woman —
March 3, 2021
Queens, it is that time again yes it is time for us to connect again on our blog!
This week we have welcomed one of the most special months of the year: women’s history month!
This is a time where we can celebrate the beauty of the woman. This is a time where we can celebrate the importance of women. This is a time where we showcase the excellence of the woman. This is a time where we can propel all women to the pedestals that we deserve to sit upon!
And, yes, you are absolutely correct: We. Sit. Pretty!
So, although we know that women are the most awesome creations on earth. The celebration of women has not been around for a long time.
Let us take a brief walk through the path towards women being celebrated for an entire month!
Can you believe that women’s history month started back in 1857?
census.gov reports that when women in New York City started protesting the working conditions in factories, women’s history month was born.
And, yes, it was in March!
Women’s Day came later in 1909 in several decades later. National women’s history week I followed in 1981. Six years later, the week celebrating women was finally expand it to a month.
It took a long time for women to receive a rightful celebratory designations, but we are here!
We all know that women are the mothers of the earth, but our greatness does not lie in that one fact.
We are mothers, teachers, chief executive officers, managers, business owners, politicians, engineers, doctors, lawyers, professors, deans, community activist, podcast host, motivational speakers, fashion consultant, news anchors and news reporters, athletic coaches, social media influencers, business coaches, writers…..
We are all of the above and then some!
We are everything!
Women help create balance in life. In order for stability to occur in relationships, a balance must be created and maintained. However, the misunderstanding about this balanced relationship is the mini believe that every relationship must features a saw that is valued higher than the other side.
And yes, you have guessed it: Society has deemed mean as the entity with the higher value.
And yes, we understand that this is an incorrect judgment!
So, where did the erroneous ideology come from?
Some say that it came once women were created! Whether you believe that woman Was created in the garden of Eden or in her own garden, there has always been a sense of men being the preferred gender, receiving more power and wilth and value than our beautiful illustrious sisters.
Some say it began with establishment of religion, while others say it began with the beginning of the Christian church.
Others bring up Confucianism, for example relationships are a huge deal. Relationships between the man and the woman are so that a woman concedes to the power of a man-Not vice versa. The man has the last word.
But although this may or may not be true, women are still important parts of our society. As one of our fabulous sisters, Shanetta Cox stated, “ Women are important because we are goddesses. If it wasn’t for us the world would not exist. Do you actually think that Obama ran the White House? No. Michelle ran that White House: He was just the face behind it!”
The current and last century has seen more value placed upon women, which is great. However, until we are all treated with equity none of us will truly be free to live as perfect specimens of God’s creation.
But just as one of our fabulous sisters, first lady of the historic 16th St., Baptist Church Candie A. Price Stated just a few days ago. Regardless of what The world may throw our way.
“ Devils don’t whine, they grind!”
The world may have just recently come around to realizing the importance of women, but our existence is not dependent upon their final approval.
Let’s repeat that for the people in the back: our existence is not dependent upon their final approval.
Regardless of their perspectives, we are important.
We are necessities.
We are fierce.
We are powerful.
We are forces to be reckoned with!
So, why are we so important? What is it about women that make us an important figure in this thing called life?

Self care vs self love? —
July 24, 2021
Self-care and self-love are words that are seemingly used interchangeably. While they are closely connected and can pass interchangeably in sentences and speech, the two have similarities and differences.
With self-care making a comeback during this ongoing pandemic, people worldwide are looking to find their own calm in mindfulness, knowing the difference between these two popular words can help you have a better understanding of what you’re trying to attain.
What is self-care?
Several organizations and researchers take a health-oriented approach when defining self-care. The World Health Organization defines self-care as: “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” According to this definition, self-care includes everything related to staying physically healthy — including hygiene, nutrition, and seeking medical care when needed. It’s all the steps an individual can take to manage stressors in his or her life and take care of his or her own health and well-being.
It is definitely a “broad concept” that can be made specific like the aforesaid examples, but how? Activities (or lack thereof) in the name of self-care offer some sort of relief physically, emotionally, mentally, and/or spiritually.
For example, if you worked a long week and feel exhausted, self-care for you might look like an afternoon nap and an evening in bed watching a good movie on Netflix. But self-care is never the same for everyone. Another person in your friend group might find relief by exerting more energy through exercise after a long week. That’s self-care, too!
Types of Self-Care
It could be anything that floats your boat — anything that puts a smile on your face. Anything that makes you feel cared for, even if it's you caring for yourself.
There are a few different categories of self-care:
•Emotional self-care, such as self-talk, weekly bubble baths, saying “no” to things that cause unnecessary stress, giving yourself permission to take a pause, or setting up a weekly coffee date with a friend
•Physical self-care, such as prioritizing sleep, adopting an exercise routine you can stick with, choosing healthy and nourishing foods over highly processed ones
•Spiritual self-care, such as attending a religious service, spending time in nature, meditating, incorporating regular acts of kindness into your day, or keeping a gratitude journal
Self-care does not have to cost anything — it’s just doing things you enjoy. And a lot of the things we enjoy or feel fulfilled from cost nothing. Stepping outside and taking a deep breath, for example, might be the greatest act of self-care.
7 Pillars of Self Care
The International Self-Care Foundation created an outline of self-care through the 7 Pillars of Self Care. As a result, many have been creating their own pillars of self-care, and ours is inspired by The Blissful Mind's 7 pillars.
1. Mental Self-Care
Mental/intellectual self-care is about cultivating a healthy mindset through mindfulness and curiosity. Mental self-care is important for developing a healthy mindset, growing your skills, reducing stress, and enhancing your knowledge and creativity.
Examples of mental self-care:
-Meditating
-Writing in a journal
-Engaging your brain in a new way
-Writing a brain dump list
-Taking an intentional break away from
technology/internet
2. Emotional Self-Care
Emotional self-care involves taking care of matters of the heart with healthy coping strategies and self-compassion. Tapping into emotional self-care helps you understand yourself more, better deal with challenges and setbacks, and develop healthy emotional responses.
Examples of emotional self-care:
-Watching a deep movie
-Listening to your favorite songs
-Writing down positive affirmations
-Asking for help when you need it
-Setting boundaries to protect your time
and energy
3. Physical Self-Care
Physical self-care involves taking care of your body with exercise, nutrition, good hygiene, and proper sleep. When you practice activities for your physical well-being, you can increase your energy levels and boost your self-esteem.
Examples of physical self-care:
-Eating meals at regular times (breakfast,
lunch, and dinner)
-Drinking more water
-Taking vitamins daily
-Getting 7-8 hours of sleep
-Trying a new workout class or video
4. Environmental Self-Care
Environmental self-care involves taking care of the spaces and places around you. The more you take care of your immediate environment, the more it will help you to thrive and feel a sense of belonging where you are.
Examples of environmental self-care:
-Arranging your workspace to be more
comfortable
-Exploring somewhere new (even if it’s in
your own town)
-Decluttering your living space
-Going outside for a walk
-Appealing to your five senses (e.g. light a
candle, adjust the lighting, put on
comfortable clothes, sip a warm drink, and
put on your favorite playlist)
5. Spiritual Self-Care
Spiritual self-care involves taking care of your soul through activities or practices that provide a sense of purpose, direction, or meaning to your life. Dedicating time to spiritual self-care can help you find more meaning in life, feel more grounded, and develop a sense of belonging in life.
Examples of spiritual self-care:
-Spending time in nature
-Finding a community to contribute to
(online or offline)
-Identifying your values & what’s meaningful
to you
-Volunteering or contributing to a cause you
believe in
-Connecting to a higher power (whatever
that means to you)
6. Recreational Self-Care
Recreational self-care involves taking care of your inner child with hobbies, fun activities, and new experiences. Recreation is important because it lets you get away from the pressure of your to-do list and simply enjoy the pleasures that life has to offer.
Examples of recreational self-care:
-Taking time for hobbies and creative
activities
-Going on an adventure by yourself or with
others
-Taking time to do absolutely nothing (and
enjoying it!)
-Playing board or video games
-Switching up your regular daily routine
7. Social Self-Care
Even though self-care is about you, it’s important to connect with other human beings on a regular basis. Social self-care means cultivating healthy relationships and connecting with people who get you. Seeking out positive social connections helps us create a sense of belonging and acceptance.
Examples of social self-care:
-Spending time with people whose company
you enjoy
-Calling or seeing your relatives
-Writing a letter to a friend (pen-pal style!)
-Talking to a support group
-Chatting in an online forum or community
What is self-love?
Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth. Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Self-love means not settling for less than you deserve.
Self-love can mean something different for each person because we all have many different ways to take care of ourselves. Figuring out what self-love looks like for you as an individual is an important part of your mental health.
How can I love myself more?
There is no instruction manual precise enough to help you love yourself instantly. It’s a process that’s as unique as a thumbprint for each and every one of us, but there are things you can do to nurture the journey of self-discovery and self-love.
-Talking to and about yourself with love
-Prioritizing yourself
-Giving yourself a break from self-judgment
-Trusting yourself
-Being true to yourself
-Being nice to yourself
-Setting healthy boundaries
-Forgiving yourself when you aren’t being
true or nice to yourself
For many people, self-love is another way to
say self-care. To practice self-care, we often
need to go back to the basics and
-Listen to our bodies
-Take breaks from work and move/stretch.
-Put the phone down and connect to
yourself or others, or do something creative.
-Eating healthily, but sometimes indulge in
your favorite foods.
Self-love means accepting yourself as you are in this very moment for everything that you are. It means accepting your emotions for what they are and putting your physical, emotional, and mental well-being first.
