M.J. Wren —

Whimsy & Dread

M.J. Wren writes literary uncanny fiction through a N’chalárist sensibility, using lyrical prose, deep fluid omniscience, and cosmic intimacy to blur the boundary between the ordinary and the incomprehensible.

“N’chalárism” is a term coined by M.J. Wren in 2026 to describe her particular literary sensibility and approach to fiction.

N’chalárism  —

The Literary Philosophy of M.J. Wren

N’chalárism is a literary sensibility rooted in the coexistence of ordinary and the incomprehensible.

It is fiction in which warmth, intimacy, absurdity, and everyday life exist alongside the fantastical, the uncanny, and the horrific. Magic does not always demand explanation. Monsters and entities do not always need names. Darkness may be alive wi the out anyone knowing why.

The world remains recognizable—remains in our world—even when reality becomes strange.

N’chalárist stories are concerned less with saving the world than with the people living within it: their relationships, their homes, their memories, their loneliness, their lives, and the quiet choices that shape their lives.

The supernatural is not necessarily the story. Sometimes it is simply there. A strange thing may happen in the hallway and someone may still have to make breakfast in the morning.

Some questions may remain unanswered some doors may remain unopened. Some things are better left just beyond the edge of understanding.

N’chalárism is not defined by the absence of darkness, but by the warmth that can exist within it.

The N’chalárist —

A Literary Aesthetic

N’chalárist Aesthetic
Where the ordinary meets the incomprehensible and the universe sometimes looks back

Deep Fluid Omniscient Third Person Breakdown:

  • Deep: When you’re inside a character’s consciousness, their thoughts, sensations, associations, memories, and emotional reactions.
  • Fluid: The narrative distance isn’t fixed. You can pull back, move closer, linger, and transition between characters naturally.
  • Omniscient: The narrator isn’t ultimately imprisoned inside one consciousness. It can know things the characters don’t observe, the wider world, and move between the minds of different characters.

N’chalárist Prose:
Prose Aesthetic
N’chalárist prose is characterized by lyrical intimacy and a sense of cosmic reciprocity, in which the world often seems to perceive the characters as much as they perceive it. N’chalárist prose aesthetic is lyrical, sensory, intimate, fluid, and subtly uncanny, with restrained figurative language and an environment that often seems aware of the characters within it.

Deep, Fluid Omniscient Third Person:
Primary third-person narrative technique
The narrative moves freely between deep character interiority, external observation, multiple consciousnesses, and broader omniscient perspective.

Cosmic Intimacy:
Signature Effects
The sensation that the universe is not merely being observed, but is quietly observing in return.

Cosmic Reciprocity:
Underlying Mechanism
The world and the character seem to perceive one another.

The Unexplained:
What remains beyond human comprehension.

The Ordinary:
Domesticity, humor, tenderness, and everyday life alongside the strange.
