Differences between therapy and coaching
While there is a lot of overlap and similarity between the two, there are also some clear and distinct differences. The most obvious being that therapists can work directly to treat mental health conditions or acute psychological distress and coaches cannot. Therapists undergo years of institutionalized training, workplace experience and are accountable to their registration board. Therapists must also maintain clear professional boundaries. These measures are in place to protect clients who may be attending therapy in their most vulnerable state… and…
Therapy can feel limiting or not quite the right fit for some people given the formality..
Coaching offers more freedom to bring in different ideas, flexibility in thinking and ways of working. This might include exploring spirituality, energetics and manifestation, pleasure and much more. Coaches can also set boundaries as feels appropriate to the relationship and may more freely share ‘how’ they navigated a similar situation or achieved a particular result in their life when this could be useful or supportive to their clients.
There is great freedom in coaching as it is currently an unregulated field, however, the shadow side of this is that people with varying levels of competency are jumping in and offering services without necessarily having the appropriate skill set, experience, accountability or ethical standards to back them. And yet, when done well (and plenty of people are doing this exceptionally well), coaching can be incredibly powerful and support people beyond the realms and confines of mainstream therapy.
Both therapy and coaching can be incredibly healing and transformative. Both can support a client with processing and also forward action and goal acquisition . Both hold unconditional positive regard for their clients and maintain belief around their potential for change, growth and greatness.
Which one is right for me?
If you consider therapy and coaching to be on a spectrum, with therapy more on the processing and healing end and coaching more orientated towards forward action and goal acquisition, this may give you an indication of where you are most needing support.
If you are wanting direct support around mental health difficulties and deep inner work, then therapy is the way to go.
