What is netiquette?

"Netiquette" or network etiquette is the rules given to have a proper behavior through online communication.

According to (Shea, 1997, para 1) netiquette is network etiquette, the do's and don'ts of online communication. Netiquette covers both common courtesy online and the informal "rules of the road" of cyberspace.

WHY DO WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND NETIQUETTE?

Netiquette exist to aid us in communicating online. Through this we can avoid misunderstanding and potential conflicts. If we communicate online without understanding the role of netiquette in cyberspace can have the risk of displaying abusive or cyber bullying type of behavior without being aware of it. Basic understanding of netiquette is important for everybody that uses the internet.

Netiquette is very important as they encourage good communication skills, prevent miscommunication, and good behavior on the internet. This will help you regulate respect and polite behavior on social media platforms, online chatting sites, and any online engagement websites.

BE CAUTIOUS WITH SARCASM
- be very caution of what you say online because people cannot read your tone or facial expressions that may lead to misunderstanding.

NEVER SEND SPAM
- before posting or forward a massage, verify first if the source if it's credible.

USE GOOD GRAMMAR
- Use proper language whenever possible because this may reflect poorly on you as a student or a professional.

DON'T TYPE ALL CAPS
- In online communication all caps is considered yelling. This is not a way to emphasize what you are saying because this is rude and offensive. If you want to emphasize something use bold or italics.

PRACTICE THE GOLDEN RULE
- when communicating online to treat others with respect. Always remember that " treat people the way you want to be treated", and you will avoid quite a number of problems.

RETURN MESSAGES PROMPTLY
- If someone sends you an email or online message, send them a response quickly. If you cannot send a thorough reply, at least acknowledge that you have received their message.

RESPEST THE PRIVACY AND RIGHTS OF OTHERS
- If you have someone's permission to share their words, then do so, but remember that people's words is their property. If your know some information about someone don't share or post it online without asking them first.

IDENTIFY YOURSELF
- identify yourself in online communications like email to let the recipient know who you are to avoid miscommunication.

Importance of netiquette in online classes

Netiquette is important in conducting online classes for us to be responsible and disciplined even if it is held online. This may also serve as a medium for effective online learning environment for the students just like in the traditional classroom.

Why should students incorporate netiquette rules in their respective online courses

As a student you need to be polite and use courtesy when communicating with others online. Netiquett have emerged to facilitate online interactions to improve their soft skills, prevent miscommunication, and guide the students of what is soft acceptable online in the absence of visual and auditory clues as expected in the traditional classroom.
