OUT OF DOORS —
Virtual Exhibition 2020
‘Out of Doors Virtual Exhibition 2020’ looks at the position we find ourselves in during COVID-19 lockdown. Spending more time indoors, our pace of life has slowed down. Many of us have turned to nature. With limited outdoor time, we may use our daily exercise to appreciate local views. We may look to the skies for a sense of wonder in the clouds. Or we may look closely at the beauty in the detail in a flower.
Four artists local to Macclesfield share their work inspired by their out-of-doors experiences in lockdown.
Work by Ellen Barratt —
Clouds are objects of great wonder. They drift effortlessly across our skies, pink at sunrise or heavy with rain.

‘Familiar Fields’ - Artist Statement
My ‘Familiar Fields’ painting series features familiar local views inspired by my regular walks in nature. As we find ourselves in lockdown in 2020, spending time in nature has felt more important than ever.
Painting views across Macclesfield, the Peak District and more, my series of landscape paintings appreciate the natural wonders available on our doorstep.

*SOLD* The Matterhorn of Cheshire' - this steep distinctive hill, Shutlingsloe, is familiar to many local walkers in Macclesfield. On a bright sunny day a walk up this hill offers stunning views of the lush green countryside. Painted with a bright palette, this painting pays homage to the invigorating experience of such a walk.
Buy PaintingORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'WHITE NANCY ON THE HILL" £35.00
Seen from miles around, White Nancy is a Cheshire Landmark atop Kerridge Hill in Bollington. Voted the most loved local landmark, this familiar white structure is a symbol of home for many locals. A walk up Kerridge Hill to visit White Nancy will gift you beautiful views of hills to the east, the Cheshire plain to the West, and Bollington beneath you.
Buy PaintingORIGINAL PAINTING 'CHARITY LANE, MACCLESFIELD FOREST' £35.00
The steep walk up Hacked Way lane to Charity lane is the most rewarding section of my favourite route through Macclesfield Forest. At the top is an awe-inspiring view. On a sunny day you can see the tall buildings of Manchester across the hills- if you've got good eyes, that is. This painting features part of the view from this walk with rolling hills and a bright blue sky.
Buy PaintingORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'CROKER HILL' £35.00
*SOLD*
Outside the Western Edge of the Peak District, at the top of Croker Hill stands the Sutton Commons BT tower. This landmark features heavily in my work as many of the spots I love to walk are overlooked by the tower. Painted in shades of navy and green, this painting of Croker Hill captures the view from one of my walks in Macclesfield Forest.
ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'WHITE NANCY' £35.00
White Nancy is a Cheshire Landmark atop Kerridge Hill in Bollington built in 1817. As a much loved local landmark, White Nancy has inspired generations of artists and poets.
"As I sit on Miss Nancy’s doorstep
I can hear the church bells chime
And looking across the valley
There’s a scene that’s almost sublime.
Before me is the Vale of Ingle
On my right are the Rainow Hills
And along the beautiful valley
Are meadows and murmuring rills."
- Poem by James Shepley Chatterton 1839-1929
ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'THE ROLLING HILLS IN HIGH PEAK' £35.00
The hills in High Peak roll into the distance as hues of blue and green dance as far as the eye can see.

Growing up spending much of my time in British countryside I find the familiar scene of Spring lambs in a field charming. For me it symbolises change as warmer, longer days creep in and new life flourishes.

*SOLD*
Lying at the western edge of the Peak District is the hill 'Tegg's Nose'- another popular walking spot among locals. This painting captures the view looking out from the southern end across the lush green countryside. The landscape is rich with different hues of browns and greens with moorland grass in the foreground.
ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'TEGG'S NOSE AND CROKER HILL FROM HACK WAY LANE' £50.00
My favourite walk up Macclesfield Forest takes me up Hack Way Lane. The steep walk offers many fantastic views at the edge of the Peak District. This painting depicts one of my favourite sights on route. The expanse of green features Tegg's Nose and Croker Hill, two landmarks of east Cheshire countryside.
Buy PaintingORIGINAL LANDSCAPE PAINTING 'GOLDEN SUNSET' £50.00
As the sun sets on a Summer's afternoon, the landscape melts from blue and green to a golden glimmer of red and orange. Light drifting away behind the hills blurs the terrain into a collection of abstract shapes and colours. This painting captures the fleeting state of the golden hour at sunset.
