Philippe Pauwels Pottery for You
Art and creative ceramics on demand
I , Philippe Pauwels, 45 years Studio Potter , technically and artistic schooled and worked in several countries and with renowned artists. Teaching at academic college and had own workshop and gallery . Have tested over 12000 glazes and 5000 luster’s and colors for Jugendstil and Art Deco.
Today after long sickness I had such a luck to recover in more than ten years. Started that time with a very small workshop. Two years ago I began this new way of life. I am 62 now but still creative, young soul and mindful in life.
During this period of ten years I saw amazingly that my skills have been further improved without being in practice.
My knowledge was there always and I spent lot of time to make digital work.
Developed spreadsheets for glaze calculations and databases to store them with tests pictures and Seger (1) formule as well different blending method’s.
Also worked many years ago with eutectic’s (2) the internet is full with science as well. You can grab them from factories and silicate chemical sites . In my opinion they are very useful because a glaze is a complicated mixture of more eutectics . They are good as starting point to create a new glaze.
If there are people who want have lessons how to do it yourself I have the first ready .
Internet is so easy these days for webinar and classes online. With glaze theory and a cheap way of understanding, see and keep track of your work and growth it is much better to use a spreadsheet ( Microsoft Windows , Apple , Google Chrome and many Linux taste’s the last i use with Libre Office in Ubuntu and Open Suse Linux , the open source is my favorite but I know all systems and software to do the job)
Being a professional studio potter is one of the most difficult things to learn. Before the ‘50 s past century it were different skills and jobs .
Bernard Leach was one of the pioneers in the field and was together with the Mingei. movement in fact the starters of doing all by oneself.
That changed the whole tradition and today it is ( if one has the money) a lot of equipment is ready bought but extremely expensive. I prefer to make lot myself also it give a better insight and knowledge of what is happening and how it works.
That satisfies me more than buy all things ready but I bought a professional wheel and a pugmill a spray booth with compressor a gas kiln and an electric kiln further it was a whole pottery from someone who was stopped by sickness.
I have before build all myself and still want to make a fast fire kiln ( wood) a slab roller and I weld forms for my wall pugmill .
On my last gas kiln I made WiFi camera and a arduino based programmer to fire and control at home because I couldn’t be at the place long enough. Now I started at my new home to create a workshop at right size.
That is in progress
