Welcome

Hey everybody! Welcome to Rel’s Route 66. My name is Mariel, but all my friends call me Rel. I’m a Georgia native, and proud 2016 graduate and former student-athlete of Alabama State University. Shoutout to all of my HBCU family!
I decided to start this blog to not only tell my story, but to create a space where others can share their gifts, perspectives, and goals with the masses. Thank you for stopping by. Tell a friend to tell a friend to check us out!

Til next time,

Name Description

If you’re like me, figuring out a name for anything is a challenge! I wanted something that would be a conversation starter, eye catching, and an alliteration!
Route 66 was a historic highway. It stretched from Chicago all the way to California. If you drove on it you were sure to have weaved through small towns, picturesque terrain, and archeological sights.
Just like this highway, life will take you on an adventure. You will weave through wonderful times, rough patches, and unexpected detours. No matter the direction, try your best to enjoy the ride.

True Like: I’m a Flight Attendant

Honesty hour. Being a Flight Attendant was never on my radar. Growing up, I couldn’t tell you the name of a Flight Attendant or Pilot that I knew. I had just finished a marketing post grad internship, but I didn’t land the full time position afterwards. So, like a lot of college grads, I applied to 100 places! Nobody was biting. Then, my mother actually stumbled upon the job posting for Flight Attending. She was telling me it was still a great opportunity, and to just think about it. I applied, but I didn’t think I would really get too far. To my astonishment, I made it all the way to a face to face interview! By now, I am on YouTube subscribing to any flight attendant to see what kinds of questions they would ask, how to carry myself, and any other keys to the streets that would help me out! By the end of the interview I was offered the job on the spot! Now, lets Fast-forward to 2020. *Three years later*. I have traveled to places I‘ve only seen in movies, I have lifelong friends from different walks of life, I helped build a home in Chulavista, Mexico, lived in a Crashpad with 11 other flight attendants in Michigan, and I’m experiencing what its like to fly during a pandemic! There are definitely glamorous moments, but everyday isn’t a fairytale. There are reroutes into your off day, turbulence, medical emergencies, missed holidays, and a few not so friendly passengers. However, I have come to enjoy this whirlwind adventure! To conclude this post, I will list some my most frequently asked questions and answers below.

1. What is your usual flight route? - I don’t have a usual route. We can ask to have certain layovers, but it really depends on your seniority with the company on whether on not they grant your wishes. One day I could be in Birmingham, Al. The next day I could be on my way to Paris, France. 2. What is your favorite layover?- Currently, my favorite international layover is Rome, Italy. The fresh gelato, my crew, and architecture were amazing. Domestically, I can always go to San Francisco. 3. Can you upgrade me to first class?- Most Flight Attendants really do everything in our power to make your flight experience exceptional. However. We cannot upgrade your already purchased ticket. You’ll need to holler at the gate agent. 4. Are you scared of Turbulence? - I use to be TERRIFIED of turbulence . Now, it would really need to be bad to get my attention. 5. Where are you based? - For three years I was based in Detroit, Michigan. It’s also known as Motor City and the home of Motown Records. One time, my roommates and I drove across the border to have lunch in Canada!
However, staring November 1, I will be based in my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. It’ll be good to be home.
