Our Story

We all have so many stories to tell. Each story carries a piece of who we are, but none of us live in isolation.

Our lives are woven together with the stories of many others, and we believe this interconnectedness is what keeps us whole.

Strange Magick was born from this web of connection, shaped by the stories of our Kin: plant, animal, fungi, mountain, water, and all beings in life’s vast web. These relationships inspire how we offer care.

As Mother Earth nourishes us and our Kin share their teachings, we walk in reciprocity, learning, remembering, and tending to our bodies, hearts, and spirits with gratitude and reverence.

We currently offer:
• Postpartum Doula Care
• Herbal Tea Blends
Handcrafted in small batches with intention and care.

These offerings ebb and flow with the needs of our community and our own capacity, but always come from a place of heart-centered intention.

Strange Magick is rooted in relationship, with land, community, and lineage. We acknowledge that our work takes place on the ancestral lands of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other Indigenous peoples who have lived in deep connection with this region since time immemorial.

We honor the ongoing presence, creativity, and sovereignty of Native communities in Portland and beyond.

Land Acknowledgment

🌎 Land Acknowledgment

Strange Magick exists in relationship—with land, community, and the countless beings who make up the web of life.

We honor that our work takes place on the ancestral village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other Indigenous peoples who have lived in connection with the Columbia River and surrounding lands for more than 11,000 years.

These lands are not “empty” or “forgotten”—they are alive with memory, medicine, and care.

⸻

Honoring the Living Presence of Native Peoples

We recognize that Portland and the surrounding areas remain home to vibrant Native communities. Despite centuries of colonization—including genocide, land theft, relocation, and forced assimilation—Indigenous peoples continue to resist, thrive, and lead.

As settlers and guests, we are learning how to walk with more awareness, humility, and reciprocity.

We honor Indigenous sovereignty, creativity, and knowledge systems, and we seek to support their continuity for generations to come.

⸻

Our Commitments

As part of our land acknowledgment, we pledge to:
• Learn and unlearn colonial narratives.
• Honor and name the Indigenous stewards of this land.
• Uplift Native-led organizations and voices.
• Build practices of reciprocity into our work—especially around birth, healing, nourishment, and herbalism.

We understand that land acknowledgment is only a beginning. It must be paired with tangible action.

⸻

Learn, Support & Engage

We encourage you to learn from, donate to, and engage with these Indigenous-led organizations doing vital work in the Portland area:

Local Native-Led Organizations
• NAYA (Native American Youth & Family Center)
Programs for children, families, housing, education, and cultural connection.

• Future Generations Collaborative
Urban Native-led public health and wellness collective.

• Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB)
Maternal and child health support for tribal communities across the region.

• NICWA (National Indian Child Welfare Association)
Advocacy and education around Indigenous child welfare and ICWA rights.

Links to these sites are provided below.
⸻

In Closing

This acknowledgment is an invitation:
To reflect. To remember. To reconnect.

It is not a checkbox, but a living commitment. One that evolves as we grow in awareness and right relationship.

We offer deep gratitude to the original and ongoing stewards of this land, and we hold ourselves accountable to walking in a way that honors that legacy.

NAYA (Native American Youth & Family Center) Family and youth services rooted in cultural knowledge.
Future Generations Collaborative Native-led health and healing initiatives in Portland
Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board Supports tribal maternal and child health across the region.
NICWA (National Indian Child Welfare Association) Protects Native children, strengthens Native families.

About Me

Hi, I’m Nix — Mother, postpartum doula, herbalist, nurturer.

Strange Magick was born from the sacred in-between: the threshold of birth and rebirth, where bodies, families, and identities are reshaped. My own journey through motherhood cracked me open in all the ways - tender, raw, and luminous, and led me deeper into this work of holding others through that unfolding.

I’m originally from Los Angeles and recently put down roots just east of Portland, in the Columbia River Gorge. While I’m newly offering my services in this area, this work has been with me for years- tending friends, family, and community through postpartum, grief, and transformation.

I’ve trained as a birth doula, but the heart of my postpartum care has been shaped by lived experience, walking this path myself and walking alongside others.

I’ve also studied herbalism through several apprenticeships, including clinical training, where I deepened my understanding of the body, plant allies, and nourishment as medicine.

As a neurodivergent BIPOC woman and a parent, I hold deep respect for the many ways people move through birth, postpartum, and identity. I’m committed to creating affirming, inclusive spaces for all - especially neurodiverse families, LGBTQIA+ families, blended families, single parents, chosen families, and those navigating systemic or generational harm. You deserve care that honors your truth.

My approach is intuitive, earthy, and reverent. I believe in slow postpartum, in tending the nervous system, and in the radical power of rest. I work with herbs, food, touch, and presence- honoring the body as wise and deserving of care.

Whether I’m preparing a warm pot of broth, steeping a calming herbal tea, or simply sitting with you in the quiet, my hope is to create space for you to feel seen, softened, and supported.

When I’m not with a family or brewing blends, you can find me singing with my partner, laughing with my kids, or walking the mossy trails near our home in the Gorge.

This work is my devotion. If you’re in a threshold moment, I’m here. Let’s soften into it together.
