I’m Tova, and Sugartivi is my virtual bakery —

Before Covid, I used to spend a ton of time cooking and baking for people I love. Once the pandemic hit and that became impossible I realized that there had to be some way of doing this virtually.

Baking and sharing a cake with someone is like nothing else. When somebody bakes for you it’s like being a kid again - you feel so cared for, so celebrated - before you’ve taken a single bite. You just can’t help it. A love of sweetness is hardwired into us as babies with our mothers’ milk.

Now I bake crypto art cakes. I make these works of art to virtually send taste through the Internet and to bring some sweetness to the world in a way that does not involve unhealthy ingredients in real life.

I work along the connection between food and memory, the mundane and the fantastic, expectation and disappointment. I create in the space between the traditional and the technological. I have a bakery in the metaverse and I’ve also begun baking hologram cakes, as holograms are an especially magical medium for me.

I’m always collecting food memories and flavor suggestions to turn into art. You can find my work minted on Tezos here:

Sugartivi’s OBJKTs

Installation at Kol Haot Gallery, Curated by Eli Kaplan-Wildmann. Jerusalem, 12.2022

As part of a group show exploring themes of miracles and wonder, ‘Recipe for tasting a miracle’ invited people to consider the smallest, tiniest, everyday units of what can be called miraculous. When you walk in there’s an abstracted ‘kitchen’ with a digital oven cooking up some AI ice creams. On the counter there are cards that ask you to close your eyes and remember the smallest miracle you experienced this week, and mark its place on a matrix of two axes: bitter vs. sweet and joy vs. nostalgia. After you’ve done that, you walk to the other side and get to take your image that I’ve used the AI to ‘bake’. In this walking tour video, I got one that’s a picture of kueh lapis, an Indonesian layered milk cake.
