A Little About Jaxsyn

Everybody meet Jaxsyn. You can call him Jax, Yaya, or Kolohe. He is rambunctious and daring. He is such a sweetheart. He isn’t afraid of bugs or getting dirty. You can find him running around hunting geckos if he doesn’t already have one in his hand or building blocks to make houses. He loves his dog Hunny Girl and every other dog he comes by. He is always down to eat regardless what it is. He always tries new foods but his favorite everyday go to even at 5 in the morning is strawberries. He loves Spider-Man and Play-Doh. He’s always drawing. It could be on paper, cardboard boxes, paper towels, or on the cement with chalk. When you ask him to sing a song his go to jams are “Peanut Butter and Jelly” and he’ll show you how to crack the peanut to make the butter or “Who Let the Dogs Out,” but he might remix it to “Who Let Mommy/Daddy/Peyton/Braydyn/Papa/Tutu/Mama Out” He also is the best big brother to Braydyn, our 7 month old.

Over the past few months, we noticed he would choke in his sleep and cry how his throat hurt. He would wake up in the middle of the night at multiple times saying he couldn’t breathe. Our first visit with an otolaryngologist (sometimes called an ENT: ears, nose, and throat specialist) at Kaiser Kona 1/30/24. The ENT examined his throat and noticed his tonsils were extremely large and when he’d cough, they would touch. He then mentioned that he’d remove them after he goes through the sleep study. We completed the sleep study at Kapiolani in O’ahu on 3/20/24. Jax ended up having the flu in the middle of April and the entire time he was sick, he complained of more pain. He’d cry almost every night that he can’t breathe and he’s choking. When he was in tears, we did not sleep. We rocked him. We held him. We consoled him, only for him to be up a few moments later. On the nights when he would have short periods of sleep, I remember watching him breathe for a few seconds to make sure everything was okay. I called during the week of 4/22 to inquire about the results, but Kona’s ENT nurse notified me that he was out on medical leave. I explained how he's been feeling and the kept telling me to see his primary care provider, but I kept telling them that this is beyond his PCP. They mentioned that we could have done the surgery in a couple months with a doctor on our island. We have done one procedure with this specific doctor in 2021 and our preference would be an O’ahu doctor because of our past experience. We wanted our family to be comfortable with the doctor performing the surgery, so we expressed our concerns with Kona’s ENT nurse. After going back and forth, the nurse at the Kona ENT’s office just started the referral process with an ENT in O’ahu. Jax starts school in August, so we are praying this happens beforehand so that he isn’t uncomfortable in school. With this now in our plans, we as a family will be expected to travel to O’ahu when the consultation needs to be done and when the surgery is scheduled. Kaiser Kona ENT that this could be scheduled very soon and they also mentioned that we would be on O’ahu for a minimum of 10 days. Cam and I will be taking off from work during these times to ensure he heals properly and that he has his parents home to care for him. AS OF 5/26- Jaxsyn's surgery has been scheduled for June 14, in O'ahu. We are humbly asking for your support during our fundraisers. We understand that everyone has their own lives and kuleana so we appreciate your support in anyway. You can also donate monetarily if you find it in your heart, Venmo: @kayleekauwe & CashApp $kayleekauwe.
