Moving is messy, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost! Without proper labeling, a few rooms can become the scapegoat for unidentified boxes, and those living spaces will be UN-livable.

Select from either our bundles or an individual set based on preference. Choose a size based on your home/lifestyle needs.

These are ideal for any residential move, and also make a great gift from realtors to moving clients or to friends as a going away gift.

*Please note we no longer offer white blank labels - due to rising supply chain costs we chose to make some minor adjustments, such as removing the blank labels, in an effort to keep prices down for customers! Thank you for understanding.

Our adhesives are permanent and only intended for cardboard moving boxes - not plastic or furniture. However, we love this hack to use a softer adhesive, like painters tape, under the label on your plastic bins!

For furniture, you can wrap your furniture in blankets + plastic wrap for protection, and then label the exterior plastic wrap! Never place label directly on furniture. [*Pictured is an older version of our labels but still with a permanent adhesive!]

Charts + Checklists

Please bear with us as we work to expand these pages - we hope to add many more helpful lists in the coming weeks & months. Stay tuned!

Below, you'll find our color-coded Room Chart as well as some helpful checklists to manage your move!

Inventory List (WIDE SPACING)

Use this inventory sheet to track valuables, furniture, sentimental items, appliances, electronics, and anything else you would want to track in the event of a loss or damage claim. Inventory lists can be critical in the claims process with insurance companies, and you can also compare them against a professional movers' inventory list to ensure all valuables are properly listed for proper coverage while in transit. Try to add as much relevant detail as possible (although not all columns may apply, e.g. not everything will have serial numbers). If you have any items of extreme value, those may additionally require receipts, proof of purchase, current value, or an appraisal. Talk with your trusted insurance agent to confirm what's required in case of a claim.

You may use this to track as many household goods as you want, or you can simply use it to track high-value items.

This is the master/original version, so in order to customize it you may need to make a copy. Please click the File dropdown > Make A Copy. Hopefully this will create a separate version that allows you to make edits and save to your account!

If you have trouble (sorry, I'm still learning Google sheets) please email me and I'd be happy to send you the Excel spreadsheet instead (which you can save to your preferred cloud drive later).

Steps for a Winning Claim

While we wish every move could go perfectly, unfortunately, things can happen. Loss, damage, mold, fires, accidents, and theft are just a few. And while most people have positive experiences, this is not a situation that you should leave up to fate. The same way you would secure homeowners or renters insurance, is the same way you should treat your household goods while in transit--if not with even more care!

Along with ensuring your insurance is up to date (double check with your homeowners/renters to make sure), you can follow this checklist to guarantee a much smoother process in the event that things go south and you need to file a loss or damage claim.

Moving Methods When Movers Aren't Available

😱 "My movers cancelled last minute!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😵‍💫 "Every local mover is booked for months!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😳 "My movers were a no-show and said they can't come now!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've heard it all... 2021 has shaped up to be a wild one. Truck driver shortages. Struggles finding reliable labor. Unprecedented housing markets. Moving companies around the country are backlogged and struggling to keep up!

If you were hoping to use movers and they are unavailable for your date, you have other options.

❒ Rental equipment - perhaps the most obvious choice for a DIY move.
❒ Portable furniture containers - choose your containers, pack & load yourself (or hire local packers), and they transport it for you! Many also offer storage if you need more time.
❒ Freight companies - similar to containers but maybe better for larger shipments that fill up a full semi-trailer. You pack + load it, they drive it! You can hire a local packing team if desired, & some freight companies also offer storage.
❒ Change your moving date or get temp storage - not ideal, but if you are on a time constraint to be out of a home, you can place your things in storage until you figure out the logistics or secure a date.
❒ Regular parcel delivery services - this is really ONLY ideal for super small shipments, like a few boxes, and if you have an actual shipping address. If you're selling most of your possessions and don't have room to hand-carry some of what's left with you, you can ship it to your destination through typical parcel services.

If you are able, try to be flexible with move-out dates, plan your move well in advance (along with a backup plan), and be aware of moving scams so you don't fall into their trap!

Home Inventory Explained, and Why You Should Take It Seriously

A home inventory can be the difference between a successful household goods claim ✅ and a painful one. ❌ This applies to life in general, not just in a move-gone-wrong. Having a list of what you owned usually speeds up insurance claims—otherwise you may be fighting for reimbursement. 💰

❒ DO-IT-YOURSELF MOVES: Moving yourself doesn't mean you're risk-free! Things happen—rental truck theft, accidents, damage, mold, and so on. Moving yourself puts the liability on YOU. Some ways to take inventory include on paper/spreadsheets, with photos + videos, or using home inventory apps (we love a combo of all 3!). Regardless, make sure a copy is stored on a cloud or with family for backup and especially focus on logging your valuables.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❒ HIRING MOVERS: Movers are *required* to take inventory. Many will include a brief item description + its current condition. Ideally, they should be more descriptive with high-value items, but how thorough they are could depend on how much info you can provide them on the spot. You can make it go smoother by creating your own list of valuables beforehand to include brand, serial numbers, size, color, quantity, appraised value (or replacement value), and any other relevant info. Having this list on hand will serve as a reminder to you amidst the chaos of what you want listed on their inventory sheets. Make sure to inquire before you hire them on their inventory process as well as what type of valuations they offer (valuation = their version of insurance).
When finished, review it for any missing items and check conditions listed (i.e. a brand new couch probably shouldn’t be listed as “worn/soiled” - if you disagree with something, tell them and make a note by it). Once you sign off, they should give you COPIES in the event of a claim. Lastly, on delivery day, you will use inventory sheets to check that each item is actually delivered.

Tips from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

They're called "rogue movers" in the industry, and they use a range of tricks to make you think you've found the best deal--until they hold your entire shipment hostage for thousands of dollars over the original amount, or demand significantly more money than what was originally agreed to after loading up all your things.

Do I Need a Moving Broker?

Moving brokers are NOT movers - they are sales teams that arrange & book moves for you by selling it to an actual moving company. Many brokers operate from call centers & they all must be registered into the FMCSA database. Deciding whether you need a broker or not comes down to personal preference.

State-Level Enforcement Resources

State laws will vary. If you're moving within one state, check the link below to search for a movers association or county/state contact number to confirm the regulations and ask how you can check a mover's licensing/registration to make sure you aren't using a fraudulent mover.

FMCSA State-Level Regulations
12

Valuation, Explained

IN-STATE:
Moving rules & regulations vary by state; check with your county or do a web search for 'FMCSA state movers associations' for state contact/website information.

INTERSTATE:
Interstate movers are required by law to offer two options:

1) Released Value Protection: the most economical and affordable (no charge); VERY limited coverage, set at no more than 60 cents per pound, per article. For example: let's say you have a pricey $1,200 electronic that weighs 5 lbs. If this item is damaged during your move, and you have Released Value Protection coverage, the moving company is only mandated to pay you $3 total compensation for it! (60¢ x 5 lbs = $3). 🧐😬 #NotCool

2) Full Value Protection: a more comprehensive protection that makes movers liable for the entire household shipment's value if lost or damaged. This one will cost you extra and any damaged possessions may only be replaced under their current depreciated value OR the mover can choose to repair an item rather than replace it.

***CAVEAT: if an item is considered "high value" (anything typically over $100/lb), they can limit their liability and not pay full coverage on this item if they were not given prior notice of this item's true value. Thus, you need to ensure that your mover has the proper shipping documents such as high value inventory sheets as well as proof of value.

Examples: fine China, glassware, antiques, artwork, memorabilia, rare collections, etc.

I find it easier to make a thorough list beforehand with exact items, estimated/appraised value or current replacement cost, brand name, artwork name, serial numbers, or any other relevant information.

3) Third-Party Insurance is optional additional coverage based on your needs. You'll have to research this aspect and decide what types out there best suit your needs, because every "moving insurance" will be tailored for something different: i.e. natural disasters, mold, theft, etc. Closely inspect your current homeowners/renters policy to see what, if anything, is covered and go from there. There will likely be some fine print listing exclusions. See below for more deets.

Valuations in Detail
13

Additional Insurance... Say WHAT?

Generally speaking, many people are satisfied with the Full Value Protection provided by their moving company (see previous Valuation post), as long as that company maintains a proper high-value inventory list. BUT... some prefer to go the extra step, especially if you're moving yourself.

As surprising as this sounds, many basic #homeowners policies either do NOT cover household goods in transit or are very limited in scope. Both homeowners + renters insurances are on a case-by-case basis for certain perils and even if they say it's covered, always inspect the fine print for exclusions.

This is where additional insurance may come in handy, but always read your current policy first. You'll want to consider risks like mold, pests, theft, damage, fires, floods/natural disasters, and so on. Unfortunately, high-value items may be subject to reimbursement limits, so you may want personal article floaters for specific items (jewelry, artwork, collections, etc).

***BoxOps is not affiliated with any links provided here, which are being provided for purely informational purposes. We always recommend doing your own independent research before your move.

Rental Truck Theft: More Common Than You Think

Using rental equipment unfortunately makes you a huge "moving" target (sorry, lame pun). Think about it: thieves don't even have to break into a home and they can make off with all of a person's worldly possessions in a matter of seconds while the owner is asleep in their hotel room. Usually, thieves have plenty of time to make off with an entire home and have the truck unloaded by morning--so when the truck is finally found, it's too late. If a door-to-door move isn't possible, here are some tips:

- HAND-CARRY YOUR PII: this stands for Personally Identifiable Information. You can use some sort of fireproof safe with a lock & key or a regular folder to keep all your personal documents in one safe place. This might include your family's birth certificates, social security cards, bank account information, marriage/other certificates, passports, medical paperwork, and any other personal documentation that may be attractive for identity theft.
- MAKE A "DO NOT PACK" BOX: sit down and write out all of your most sentimental possessions that CANNOT be replaced - A deceased family member or pet's ashes? Baby boxes or photo albums? Your late grandmother's antiques? Sentimental or high value jewelry? Whatever those items may be, you can always consider keeping that box with you at all times. But if you bring it into your hotel with you, just remember to take it with you when you check out!
- KEEP THINGS HIDDEN: keep any valuables that are staying in the car out of sight; electronics, prescription drugs, wallets, firearms, professional gear and so on are very attractive for theft. Find ways to keep these items secure and out of sight.
- LOCK IT UP: when you first pick up your truck, always make sure the locking mechanisms work properly, including the back door latch. AND invest in a really strong padlock--don't cheap out on this part! You may also consider looking into a steering wheel lock and/or a portable car alarm. Make sure all windows are rolled up.
- PARK UNDER THE LIGHT: at your resting stop, try to find a parking spot under a well-lit area; bonus points if it's within the line of sight to your hotel room.
- BACK UP TO A WALL: make it extra tough to try to open that back door or remove things; back up as close as you can (without hitting anything) to a wall or other area that makes it difficult; if you have another vehicle, use that to block the front so they really can't go anywhere with it.
- OBTAIN INSURANCE: triple check your homeowners/renters policy and read the fine print. If they do cover theft, you may need to file a police report, but always read your policy and consider coverage if need be. And when it comes to rental truck accidents, most car insurance companies will not cover a moving truck so you will absolutely want to make sure you take advantage of any insurance offered by your rental equipment company!

Hiring Movers During COVID-19

For long-distance or overseas moves, hiring professionals may be one of your only options. In this case, you may want to inquire with the company on safety measures. Here’s a few things to consider:

- Make a game plan for packing days that works for you, especially if there will be any high-risk family members (i.e. blocking off an empty room to social distance in while movers pack). Wear your mask when talking with movers & maintain distance.

- Ask your movers to wash their hands before starting + frequently. Also keep hand sanitizer, masks & disinfectant accessible.

- Request your movers stay on the same floor or work in nearby rooms so you can follow behind to sanitize each room when they’re finished. For example, if you plan on staying in the house a few more days, you’ll want your kitchen to be totally sanitized before using it after the movers leave.

- The EPA website has a list of disinfectants for use against COVID-19. It offers a way to search the list by product name so you can easily look up the ones you have at home.

- *MAKE SURE you’re following the cleaning label to determine proper wet/kill time. This means a surface MUST remain visibly wet for a certain number of minutes for that disinfectant to actually kill the virus it claims to kill. This is why sprays are often preferred over cleansing wipes. Spray down a surface, leave it for the instructed timeframe, & then wipe it down.

Moving with Pets

🐶 Keep a headcount on your pets! 😼
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Especially those sneaky little cats. 🐈 Sometimes they'll curl up in your drawers, baskets or boxes, especially if they're trying to hide amidst the chaos. Pets can get stressed out too! Here are a few tips to keep them safe:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Keep them in a quiet, blocked-off room with their bed, food, water, litter box, blankets, toys & anything else to reduce anxiety.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Remind any hired movers of pets & which room to avoid.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Hang DO NOT ENTER signs outside room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Keep dresser drawers/furniture closed, double check inside boxes before taping shut.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Keep them confined anytime exterior doors will stay open.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 If possible, find a pet sitter or boarding facility during packing & loading.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Take them on frequent walks to keep them from getting restless.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Keep leashes & all pet necessities separate for your trip (along with any other items/valuables to hand-carry--use our "Do Not Pack" label for those important boxes!).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾 Talk to your vet about travel and make a plan of action for high-anxiety pets.

Investing In Electronic Toll Passes

Moving to a new part of the U.S. soon? Research if there is an electronic toll system in that state + consider getting it beforehand! It could save you the headache of carrying cash, waiting to pay large tolls, and some even give you access to express lanes.

Electronic tolls include a gadget that usually requires you to hang it on/near your windshield in order to be recognized as you pass through a toll, and you can reload money onto it as needed.

As someone who has frequently traveled up and down the east coast, having an electronic option in place was a game changer! It serves it's purpose to avoid worrying about cash every time a toll booth sneaks up & allows you to bypass traffic.

E-ZPass, for example, is available in 17 states, and many others have their own systems in place (i.e. TxTag, K-Tag, Peach Pass, Sun Pass). This is also an easy way to track those expenses if your relocation is reimburseable for a new job.

Move-Out Waste: Find Local Recycling Solutions

Moving is guaranteed to leave you with some items you no longer need, like old paint, medication, fertilizers, and so on. And since there are certain things that you CANNOT load into a moving truck (and shouldn't for the safety of your things), you might be wondering how to safely discard them.

These may include:
- Cleaning supplies/household chemicals
- Paint + stain
- Electronics
- Lawn + garden chemicals
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Batteries
- Medication
- Automotive fluids

These are just a few items that should be discarded properly and may not be allowed in the regular trash. Check the link below for a local hazardous waste collection center or do a search for collection events in your area. Spring time is usually a time for collection events, & you can also see if any local friends or family want any items like cleaning supplies!
