GF Dining - Inner West

My reviews of places with gluten free and/or coeliac safe meals around Sydney, Australia. I'll keep adding to this as I visit more places!

This page focuses on food found in Sydney's Inner West (where I grew up & lived most of my life). Check out my other pages for other areas in Sydney.

Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre

I was gobsmacked this place could cater to coeliacs. Had a delicious meal with no glutenings 👏🏻

View

The Henson, Marrickville

Coeliac safe fried goods, say no more!

View

Gluten Free Friends Forever, Marrickville

Update: they have closed their shop front with a plan to focus on markets in the future, with possibly another location in the future.

View

Botany View Hotel, Newtown

GF burgers & fries at this fun live music venue. You may strike gold & also get some Two Bays beer on tap!

View

White Cockatoo, Petersham

Plenty of GF options in a lovely kid & dog friendly pub. Fried chicken is on the menu - can you go past that?!

View

Sebastien Sans Gluten, Leichhardt

A 100% gluten free bakery with absolutely delicious goods! The coffee eclair was excellent & I have dreams about the garlic twist.

View

Thai Pothong, Newtown

A dedicated gluten free menu in lush surroundings. Recommend a visit!

View

Public House, Petersham

Yum yum! GF pizzas & coeliac-safe hot chips. Yes please! Chat to the staff about your dietary restrictions & enjoy 👌🏻

View

Bay Tinh Vietnamese, Marrickville

Get yourself to this Marrickville restaurant for a proper delicious GF experience.

Loaaads of options clearly marked on the menu. The crispy pancake & curry we ordered were ohmygod amazing.

View

Nutie, Balmain

A GF institution, reduced to 1 location in Balmain now. Loads of vegan options too, an easy option for catering to food intolerance pals.

Often have a stall at markets so keep an eye on their insta @wearenutie

View

The Yard, Camperdown Commons

A very tasty gf pizza at this cute pandemic friendly outdoor eatery in lush surrounds. Ask the staff for other options.

View

Harold Park Hotel, Glebe

Lovely inner west pub with lots of coeliac safe gf options on the menu, including this amazing schnitty

** UPDATE JUNE 2022: this pub is under new management & no longer caters to coeliacs in the same manner. An utter disaster! I have not tried any food there under the new management and am NOT impressed by their menu in terms of GF offerings.

View

The Rose Hotel, Erskineville

A coeliac safe chicken schnitzel & chips? Omg yes please. This was fantastic - add this venue to your list!

View

The Pizza Maker, Petersham

Delicious gf pizza available for takeaway or delivery in the inner west. In non-Covid times I believe you could dine in too. Lovely texture base.

View

Calaveras Mexican Cantina, Newtown

Loads of GF items on the menu, really knowledgeable & accommodating staff, plus a super cool vibe! Who doesn't love Mexican food?!? 🌮

View

Atom Thai, Newtown

There's a dedicated gf menu at this Newtown institution with plenty of tasty options. Delicious eats for a good price. Worth a visit!

View

Envy Deli Café, Summer Hill

Plenty of GF options at this bustling inner west café including hot chippy chips. Don't believe I've been charged extra for GF bread either which is a big green flag!

UPDATE MAY 2023: They've changed chips supplier & the staff member couldn't tell me if they were GF or not.

View

Beach Burrito, Newtown

Take care as the corn chips aren't coeliac safe but you can order a bunch of their tacos on corn tortillas & they're soooo delicious!!

View

Andiamo, Summer Hill

Very disappointing pizza bases at Andiamo. $5.50 extra and SO tough they gave me an aching jaw. They used to be great so it's a huge shame. They also do GF pasta which is also $5.50 extra which doesn't seem worth it but the sauces are good. My favourite is the alla Norma.

View if you must

The Garden Bistro, Wests Ashfield

A few GF options on the menu but I couldn't go past a pizza. The base was lovely. Chat to the staff about x-contam to see what precautions they take (I always recommend this as staff change between visits!).

UPDATE: The menu has changed & loads of things have a GF marker now but they are NOT coeliac safe (e.g. everything fried together) so do take care or maybe just avoid all together. Hate when venues try lure in GF customers but don't actually make anything safe to eat.

GF Dining - CBD & Surrounds

This page focuses on food found in Sydney's CBD & surrounds. Check out my other pages for other areas in Sydney.

Surly's American Tavern

If you are after dirty barbecue, this might be for you! Very sloppy, very tasty.

Please note: I've seen other coeliacs eat the fries here but the staff onsite told me fryers were contaminated... sooo.... ask & make your own call!

View

The Colonial British Indian, Darlinghurst

Lots of gf options on the menu, mention coeliac so they take extra care. Very tasty!

View

Five Guys

Tbh I don't think I'd bother going back...

The fries are normally good but when I went they were wayyy too overseasoned. The burgers overseas are good but so expensive here (nearly $20 for a bacon cheeseburger) + they have no gf bun so you're eating it bare. Give it a go if you are curious but be prepared. All allergens are on the website which is helpful.

View

Untied, Barangaroo

Super lush location for a coeliac-friendly boozy brunch (or just a fun bar to visit any time!). Delish food, unlimited drinks, dreamy surroundings. What more could I ask for?

View

Opera Bar, Circular Quay

Delish gluten free pizza (& a few other options too!) at this Sydney institution. Come for the views, stay for the food & drinks! Very clear labelling & waiter announced GF on arrival at the table.

View

Betty's Burgers, Darling Harbour

Lots of coeliacs chimed in on this one so it seems to be a good'un - just chat to the staff! The fries were so-so but the burger was amaaaazing. Chargrilled deliciousness.

View

Wholegreen Bakery, CBD

100% gluten free bakery + dine in café. Look at this glorious fresh flakey pie! All your usual bakery fare plus some fantastic dine in options (inc GF 🍻)

View

INDU, CBD

South Indian & Sri Lankan dining. Loads of GF options - you'll be completely stuffed. A lil bit fancy 🤙🏻

View

Hurricane's Grill, The Rocks

Tourist trap bar & grill but with plenty of gluten free options. A decent meal, but don't go out of your way.

View

Sir Stamford Hotel, Circular Quay

NOPE NOPE NOPE, do NOT waste your money or time on the dreadful high tea at Sir Stamford. Read my review to find out why.

View at your peril

Opera Kitchen, big no no

The menu here was v limited, & even more so for gluten free marked items. I ordered pasta and it was gluten free but it was also dreadful & expensive. Don't waste your time or money. Opera Bar next door is far less disappointing.

GF Dining - North & South

I haven't visited many places yet in the north or south so they are grouped together for now while I gather new content. It's not quite Sydney but I am also including down Wollongong way as there's a GF institution in that area!

Katoomba RSL

A coeliac fryer & plenty of options in a family friendly setting. You wont be disappointed!

View

Bootlegger Bar, Katoomba

The owner is coeliac so you are in safe hands. Delicious slow cooked meats, chips, corn bread, nachos etc plus an extensive bar in a super cool setting. Definitely visit.

View

The Prince Kirrawee

I had a lovely salad. Be sure to discuss gluten precautions, especially if ordering pizza. No extra charge for gf pizza, pasta, or buns 🤯

View

Miranda Diggers

An amazing coeliac-safe kitchen with loads of gluten free & dairy free options. Peace of mind when ordering as the head chef Andrew is 100% on top of coeliac requirements. He separates everything in the kitchen to negate any possible x-contam chances.

View

Gf Pasta Di Casa

Usually a spot to pick up frozen gf meals & sweets, but occasionally this place serves up hot food! Had a delightfully crispy chicken schnitzel 👌🏻👌🏻

View

GF Eats, Bellambi

A 100% gluten free café with a varied menu & loads of frozen goodies to take home! Not quite Sydney but seriously worth the trip.

View

View

The Village Cafe, Mosman

A lovely cafe in Mosman offering tasty GF bread. Worth a visit for an easy breakfast 👌🏻

View

Avalon, Blue Mountains

A phenomenal baked camembert served with crusty GF bread. So damn delicious.

View

Hydro Majestic High Tea, Blue Mountains

Lovely GF high tea with a gorgeous view!

View

Sana Kitchen Café, Saint Ives

100% gluten free coeliac safe café with super friendly owner. They serve burgers, salads, sweet treats. 100% worth a visit - very tasty food.

UPDATE: Unfortunately this place shut down due to staffing & supply issues.

View

GF Dining - Chains

My reviews of chain restaurants with gluten free and/or coeliac safe meals around Sydney, Australia. I'll keep adding to this as I visit more places!

Betty's Burgers

My first visit to Betty's was confusing due to the menu labelling ("low gluten"?!?!) but they are actually great at catering to coeliacs. Tell them when ordering you are coeliac & they take extra care.

Order the Betty's double - it's soooo good. The chips are so so; not the best. I would stick to a burger only!

View

G-Free Donuts

GFree Donuts can be found at markets across Sydney as well as at their regular pop-up at Miranda Westfield. Crispy hot, fresh, amazing!

View

Grill'd

Plenty of GF options at Grill'd including 2 gf buns, chips, & healthy fried chicken! Chat to the staff about precautions & enjoy the burgery goodness. The impossible burger is surprisingly delicious!

View

Guzman y Gomez

If I am out & about, Guzzy is nearly always my top choice for lunch or dinner. Their menu has fresh & delicious mexican choices, but the salad is usually my pick for a healthier option. Their website outlines clearly what is GF & outlines how cross contamination risk is reduced, although risk cannot be zero as they handle other things in there too.

Update: since this post, I've learned the fries now have a may contain statement (they never used to) due to changes on their manufacturing line. The fryer is not shared (but always check) but many coeliacs will not want to order the fries because of this. I've never had any issues, but some aren't comfortable with this risk so avoid the fries if that's you.

View

Zambrero

Plenty of GF options including a burrito wrap which is sooooo tasty! Ask and they'll take precautions like lining the tortilla press & using fresh utensils. Note: the beef is quite sweet so opt for chicken or pork instead. The hot sauces are a little odd 🤣

View

McDonald's

Look this is a controversial one so take care.

Many large Maccas stores do their fries & hash browns totally separarely from gluteny things meaning they are coeliac safe. You need to check though as every store is different. I've ordered a bunless burger loads of times and never had an issue. I sometimes add my own bun/bread at home or just eat with a knife & fork if out (add lettuce & tomato - yum!).

View

Ready meals

View

So tasty! So crispy! Love these, they're amazing in a wrap with some crisp lettuce & perinaise.

UPDATE 2023: The latest box I got was *SO* fishy in taste. Not for me. Husband still enjoyed but I wouldn't eat again.
