About Thunder Moon Studio
Artwork by Carla Riseman
I create impressionist wall art and stationery, pet portraits and home portraits. My work answers the question, “how could our world be more delightful?” It is a depiction of day-and-night dreaming. It amplifies the whimsey and uncovers the magic that lives within its subjects. It explores existing possibilities and imagines new ones.
I work in mixed media, using primarily watercolor, ink, gouache, acrylic, fineliner, alcohol marker, graphite and colored pencil. I find joy in the cooperative interaction between me, my brushes, my mediums and my substrates. I’ve recently added digital art to my repertoire and I love exploring the capabilities of tools like Procreate. Digital art allows me to entertain and express ideas in ways that traditional mediums can’t. Water souluble mediums lend my work an element of unpredictability, indulging my exuberant curiosity and my ceaseless quest for novelty. There is so much in our life that is out of our control which we fret over. When I create, I encourage myself and the viewer to embrace and find the adventure in the fact that we don’t control everything.
I find inspiration in adventure, nature, music and the triumph of love over all. I find inspiration in other artists. Perhaps most acutely, I find inspiration in color. As I work with or blend colors together, I experience visceral, physical sensations which can sometimes verge on euphoria. Colors themselves bring me joy. Art gives me a vocabulary to express out-of-the ordinary ideas that I am excited about in a way that is accessible to everyone. I am driven to leave a record of our existence that tells who and what we loved and how we loved them. I draw and paint the love and the beauty that I see in everyday life and the magical potential I believe in.
My artwork represents the love we have for one another, for our pets, our fellow humans, our shared spaces, the plants and animals that share the earth with us, and the earth itself. It represents possibilities, hopes and dreams. It embodies the belief that we can do, be and have better than what we have right now. It accounts for our past, acknowledges our present and looks forward to a future that is more beautiful, kind and loving.
