Steps to optimize bedroom for the best night sleep.
National Sleep Foundation advises that healthy adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
Majority of us are having a problem meeting this sleep hours recommendation which can be hazardous to our overall health. Aside from the recommended hours of sleep, quality of sleep is also becoming a recent problem due to a lot of factors like technology, stress and climate.
We know that most of the factors causing sleep problems are out of our control but there are steps that we can easily take to improve the overall environment of our bedroom. Steps that help make our bedroom more conducive to a better quality of sleep and we are happy to share them here.
1. Calming color tone
Shades of blues and greens are inherently calming because we associate these to nature like the sky and sea. Imagine the last time you felt so relaxed basking in the middle of nature on a good day.
We would want to bring the calming effect of nature inside our bedroom by using the same shades of color.
2. Limit technology.
This one is too obvious. We just couldn’t resist the pull of lookin in our phone screens. I’m also guilty of this, but this inadvertently delays our sleep time because it stimulates our brain which of course would make it difficult to sleep.
3. Right window cover
Study shows that artificial light at night can suppress our melatonin levels which disrupts our sleeping pattern. Choosing the right window cover to black out bright lights coming from outside is going to resolve this problem.
4. Mattress Quality
A bad mattress can cause discomfort, making it more difficult to fall asleep and can potentially lead to less sleep quality.
It is also advisable to change your mattress after around 7 years.
5. Bedding Type
Choosing the right bedding all depends on the climate and how your body responds to it when sleeping.
Bedding with natural fibers like cotton or linen are an ideal pick if you sleep hot. You wouldn’t want to trap all the heat your body releases when sleeping which could disrupt your sleep.
On winter, cotton sheet is a good choice as well. Pick the one that has a higher thread count than 400.
6. Smell and sleep relationship
In the National Sleep Foundation’s 2012 Bedroom Poll, 78% of people said they were more excited for bed when their sheets had a fresh scents.
