Our story

How Hippie Pharm Came To Be

When I became a mother in 2015 I started to become more aware of the ingredients that my daily use products contained in every aspect of our lives.
I began to realize that the majority of the ingredients were harsh chemicals that are known to cause cancer among many other health conditions.. My son began to have health issues and very quickly I wondered if the things in our life might be contributing.
The only obvious solution to the dilemma of replacing my daily routine to me was to switch to all-natural products.
I extensively researched exactly what I wanted my skincare products to do and from there I started formulating the products you see in my skincare line today. I have been using my own line faithfully for the last 7 years and I have watched my skin go from tired and worn out to young and youthful along with many others who've been using my products.

I am a mother to 3 beautiful boys striving to keep life fun and healthy. I am currently working on advancing my skills in skin science and formulation in order to stay updated on the best natural ingredients.

It is my hope and desire to assist my customers in getting the healthiest, happiest beautiful skin possible.

What is Hyaluronic Acid and Why use it?

October 5 2021

Hyaluronic Acid is powerful stuff.
But don’t let the word “acid” fool you. This gel-like water-holding molecule is a moisture-binding ingredient that helps keep skin plump and hydrated. And, it’s actually something our bodies naturally produce.
Hyaluronic Acid helps retain over 1,000 times its weight in water within the cells of the skin, making it an excellent moisturizer.
Scientific studies have shown that Hyaluronic Acid helps improve skin hydration and production of collagen, fight free radicals, maintain skin elasticity, and even has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help with wound healing.
Yes, please!

So why do we need more if our bodies already produce it?

The average human body contains about 15 grams of Hyaluronic Acid. However, one-third of that gets degraded and synthesized on a daily basis. We also produce less and less as we age. So we want more, which is why many anti-aging products contain Hyaluronic Acid. Plastic surgeons often inject Hyaluronic Acid into sunken areas of skin to plump it up, but you don’t need to get injections to reap its benefits. Just choose a serum or moisturizer that contains Hyaluronic Acid (also commonly listed as Sodium Hyaluronate) for softer, smoother, more hydrated skin.

Hippie Pharm's hydrating Rose Toner has exactly what you need!

Hydrating Rose Toner with Hyaluronic acid

Why natural artisan soaps are better than mass-produced soaps

Let’s get strait to the truth!

Why natural artisan soaps are better than mass-produced soaps

Commercial soaps are often made with chemical detergents, hardeners and synthetic lathering agents and are often not even labeled as soap due to the fact they lack in the bulk being nonvolatile alkali-fatty acid compounds. This can not be produced using chemical-based ingredients.

Ever wonder why your skin feels so dry or irritated?

Handmade (artisan) soaps naturally produce glycerin as a byproduct of soap making which is a humectant that attracts moisture from the air to the skin. Without glycerin soap isn’t nearly as skin-loving and can leave the skin feeling dry. Plus, artisan soap is made with actual natural ingredients that the skin will love and appreciate.

What about essential oils?

Artisan soaps created with essential oils actually provide many benefits depending on the type of essential oils used in the process of making handmade soaps. For example, Lavender provides a calming and soothing effect while adding a bit of tender loving care to your skin. Tea tree oil in soaps not only has an amazing smell but it helps fight off lots of different types of bacteria while boosting your skin's ability to heal. Lemon is a great way to help over time even out your skin tone. Each essential oil just adds an extra amazing benefit to your soap. So whatever you are looking for you will certainly find in a bar of handmade soap.

The other benefit of handmade artisan soaps is the natural clays, activated charcoal and dried herbs they may contain in them. These are not only great detoxifiers but a great way to gently exfoliate away dead skin cells our bodies have a hard time removing. With dead skin cell build-up comes the appearance of being older than we really are and lacking in the lustrous glow our bodies naturally have. I for one don’t like the idea of storing dead skin cells, so lots of exfoliation. The clays also helps in absorbing excess oils and helps to control shine. This in return helps to keep those pores on your skin from clogging up. Now, this doesn’t mean it's going to dry your skin out as clays just help with balancing the natural moisture of your skin.

Now you may be wondering about Lye and why it’s in soap.
Without Lye soap can not create the saponification process that turns the oils into soap. Even though Lye is in the ingredients it is actually removed in the saponification process. So you never have to worry about Lye coming into contact with your skin.

So when you think about commercial based soaps and handmade artisan soaps, you have to decide which one you would prefer, chemicals you are unfamiliar with or a soap you can completely read and feel safe using. I know it’s a hard choice but if you decide to go with handmade artisan soaps you won't be disappointed in how they feel on your skin or the benefits they may provide. Not to mention they are pretty cool looking as well. Soap art I call it.

Blue Lotus Aloe Soap

Blue lotus is an ancient plant ally that has coexisted with society since the days of the great Egyptian Pharaohs. Its effects are largely sedative, it will deepen your sleep and relieve stress. This strong plant medicine provides powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, tangible stress release, and creates a euphoric state of being. Its fragrance deepens spiritual connections and elevates consciousness.

Rose Aloe Soap

There are many benefits to rose oil! Benefits include helping skin heal from scars and moisturizing it, fighting inflammation, relieving stress, and promoting circulation.
Rose essential oil has healing properties. Studies have shown that rose aromatherapy can help treat anxiety and depression. Women may also be particularly partial to roses because the essential oil helps relieve symptoms of PMS, including restlessness, stress, insomnia, bloating, and menstrual pain.

How I make my all-natural hydrosol that is used in various products I create

November 17 2021

First of all your probably wondering what is hydrosol?

Hydrosols are sometimes referred to as hydrolats, distillate waters or floral waters. Explained as simply as possible, a hydrosol is the aromatic water that remains after steam-distilling or hydro-distilling botanical material such as lavender. ... This can result in hydrosols with superior aroma and therapeutic benefit.

This is my process

I have grown a variety of fragrant rose bushes in my yard that I tend to by providing organic compost.
When the roses bloom I wait till they are half open and harvest the heads. Once I have a strainer full of rose heads I rinse them in my sink and pluck all the petals off placing them in another basket.
While the water drains from the petals I set up a large pot and place a clean brick in the center of the pot with a small bowl on top of the brick.
All the petals are stuffed around the side of the pot until it reaches the bottom of the bowl and I cover the petals with fresh water until I reach the top of the brick. From there I set the stove on low heat and place a bowl-shaped lid upside down on top of the pot. As the water warms up and produces condensation it rolls to the center of the lid and drops in the bowl collecting the essence of the rose petals. This process takes about 12 hours and frequent checking in order to ensure that the pot doesn’t run dry of water and to make sure the bowl in the center does not overflow. All the hydrosol goes into a sterile glass jar and organic witch hazel is added to ensure that no bacteria grows. This is how I not only process roses but any and all herbs or flowers that are grown on my property.

This is probably the easiest way to extract the essence from herbs when you don’t have a essential oil extractor.

Since my original article on this subject, I have upgraded to a copper still that has reduced processing time down to only an hour with far more security in a pure high quality product. One of the best investments to make when you are juggling young children and a business. Simplify while keeping high quality.

Below are a few of my favorite products made using hydrosol extraction.

Blue Lotus Hydrosol

Salt and Sugar scrubs what’s the difference

November 19

What’s the difference between Salt and Sugar in scrubs

Exfoliating away dead skin cells reveals a fresher more radiant skin. So which one do you choose for a natural exfoliant, sugar scrub or a salt scrub?

The main difference between sugar particles and salt particles is the size of the exfoliating granule.
Sugar scrubs have smaller granules than salt and are best suited for sensitive skin. While, salt scrubs are generally more abrasive because of their sharper edges and larger granules, therefore they do a better job at smoothing out the rough skin patches on the body.

Let’s take a deeper look into sugar scrubs! Sugar-based body scrubs can potentially be used on the face as it’s more gentle. Due to the diameter and size of the granules, this means that any and all skin types can enjoy them.

Sugar scrubs are high in glycolic acid content, which helps protect the skin against harmful toxins. This is vital for the maintenance of healthy skin and this acid works to both condition and moisturize. Even the roughest and dryest skin can benefit from sugar scrubs because sugar sizes come fine, medium and coarse. Sugar also has the benefit of melting as you use it from the heat of your own skin. It’s especially beneficial to your lips.

On to salt scrubs!

Most salt scrubs use sea salts which are natural purifiers that remove pore-clogging toxins. They are also better for their therapeutic, mineralization benefits. Salt scrubs help the skin to breathe easier, promote better circulation, tighten the skin and also improve skin texture. The various types of salt scrubs have different trace minerals, which include calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. It’s these minerals that stimulate circulation, reduce the inflammatory response and act as a detoxifying agent along with a general muscle relaxant. They are also super helpful for treating keratosis pilaris.

Which scrub should you use and where to use it

Body: The skin on the body tends to be thicker and oftentimes much drier, so it is recommended that you turn to a salt scrub for this area.

Decolletage: The skin on your decolletage is sensitive so you should approach this area just like you would with your face- with a gentle touch. The best scrub to use for this area is a sugar scrub because of the smaller granules and it is less abrasive on the skin.

Face: Similar to your decolletage, the skin on your face can be more sensitive to abrasive exfoliants like salt. You should choose a sugar scrub that can gently remove sebum and provide the complexion with moisture.
Feet and elbows: Your skin is the thickest on your feet and elbows. So, of course, these areas can handle an exfoliator with a bit more grit and larger granules. Salt scrubs are recommended for these areas.

You can use these scrubs as often as you feel you need to. Just remember to be gentle when applying and use small circular motion. Always rinse off with warm water. If your skin starts to get irritated or starts to dry out, reduce how often you use these scrubs. Pay attention to what your body is saying as it will be the biggest help in deciding how often you need to exfoliate.
