Exam tips from our teachers

Here are some helpful tips for high school students who are preparing for their exams

Make sure you are getting enough sleep!

Sleep is a key process that allows our brains to sort and store information properly, which will maximize your studying!

Create complete study notes!

These should include your course/lecture notes, assignments, handouts, textbook readings, etc!

Make sure all your notes are IN YOUR OWN WORDS!

It doesn’t help to memorize information if it doesn’t make sense to YOU!

Create a study schedule!

Focus on the review of topics that your don’t know or aren’t confident with. Having subject-specific studying goals is more meaningful that picking a sent amount of time in which to study!

Create visual queues for yourself!

Flowcharts, graphs, formulas, pictures, etc!

Use flash cards!

These can help with recall of quick facts that you need to know as well as definitions and key components of formulas that you use often!

Choose a productive environment!

Study spaces should be organized, well-lit and free from distractions!

Decide what your studying needs are before getting together with a study group!

It can be fun to work with friends, but you will do your BEST studying with them?

Take scheduled breaks!

This prevents mental fatigue and helps your brain to properly sort the material you are practicing. Make sure you return to work when you are done with your pre-planned break!

Stop cramming!

The best recall of information happens after a good night’s sleep, so hoping that you can master a whole unit in the hour before your test will not help as much as you would like!

Remember to celebrate your hard work!

This helps to minimize burn out and to avoid some of the negative feelings that come up during exams!

Be kind to yourself!

Your self-worth is not based on a grade or percentage. We can always work to review and master material that we struggled with during a test or exam!

Wear a watch!

Poor time management during a test can cause you to run out of time for important questions. Aim to leave 10 minutes at the end of your testing period to review what you have produced!

Get down what you can!

Point form notes may get you part marks if you are strapped for time!

Focus what you know first!

Skip the challenging questions and come back to them, rather than getting stuck!

Read your questions carefully!

Make sure you are addressing all part of the question asked and review your work before submitting it!
