My Personal Portfolio

My Point of View on The Street

The following is a list of my personal photography projects and they are still ongoing. When I’m down to the street I like to play a scene with people's expressions, gestures, abstracts, mundane objects, as well as playing with light and shadow.
All photos in this project was taken using my iPhone 6 and iPhone 11, and edited only using native editing app.

Solitude —

Sole, Focus, and Isolate

The first time I came up with the idea of “Solitude” was when I took my first minimalistic sky photo with some odd clouds and used my neighbor’s roof to add a small layer.
After I looked back at my collection, I was really intrigued by how minimalistic these photo are. There's something that calms me when I see some empty space in a minimalist photo and focus on one or two objects.

From time to time I got more and more interested in trying to create other minimalistic photos and adding some elements like people, animals, and mundane objects.
Photos in this portfolio are also a reflection of the other side of me who actually wants peace, focus, solitude, and being isolated from everyone.

Anonymity —

A Little Bit of Invisibility

This series is a representation of my perspective to capture people’s portrait without showing their whole face directly and instead it give a mysterious appearance about their identity.

In other words, this idea also a representation about our society where some people like to expose themselves and let other people know about their identity, but there are also those who don’t like to expose their privacy.

As a photographer sometimes we are very impressed with the appearance of our subjects, it can be their outfits or what activities they are doing. And when we want to capture the moment, sometimes we still think twice to capture it. Is it appropriate to do or not and that condition always hold us back to capture their unique moments.

House In Monochrome —

Happiness and Sadness, Black and White

House in Monochrome is an analogy to describe my house as a vessel of our happiness and sadness as one family.
In 2007 we moved to the big city for our first time to lived with our grandparents.
Since then we have experienced ups and downs in life, but in the end we always find a way to be happy.

And this project started when my brother showed me his photo of piles of our stuff on his desk, and he is very proud with the photo he takes.
And at that time I just realized that I was too busy to capture some moments on the street and forgot that I can capture something or moments that are close to me, my house.

Strange Paradise —

Paradise?…Almost

On my street photography journey, I use terms Strange Paradise to describe how the reality where I live. Capture some moments of our society, regardless it’s a crucial moments to capture (for some people’s perspective) or just capture some funny moments that people created without them knowing it.

Deeper down, Strange Paradise is a contradiction. Contrary with the concept of Paradise as a “perfect place”. That’s why I included a little bit photos about our society’s condition such a poverty, environmental issues, and injustice.

But in the end, whenever I think about Strange Paradise as my vision, I just think about the beauty in the world we individually living. Even if it may seem confusing to others we find comfort in this Strange Paradise we make for ourselves, for the sake of our perspective.

Paradigm Shift —

Reframe My Thoughts

Back in 2018 when I started my passion in street photography I only realized one thing, that I used to only focus on one type of photo to shoot and that was the “direct person shot”. At that time I’m too afraid to explore different things, I never played with how the background or foreground should be in my photos or play a scene to create a different sequences from photo to photo. Instead I just pursue playing with people’s expressions over and over again. And over time it makes me bored with my results.

Until one day I started to revise my photos. I decided to revisit my favorite places and start to play a scene with different approaches, exploring the elements around me and until now one of my favorite technique in street photography is playing with reflection.
The reason why I like reflection is I feel like I can bend the reality through my photos. To create a different feeling and story than I just point my camera directly at my object. It can be a symmetrical reflection or we can find a reflective object to create a unique perspective even it looks like manipulative or abstractive.

I was inspired by what my father used to say when we talked about art, he always said “don’t be afraid and always try to improvise, and don’t need to stick with standards all the time”.
Therefore I try to apply it to my photography works and started to always revise my previous photos to find out maybe I’ve missed something in the first place, so when I’m back to the street I can create a better version of my previous works.

Exploring Street Through Color

The first time, in 2018 when I decided to pursue my hobby as a street photographer, I faced a dilemma of what colors should I use for my photography. Personally, at that time I can’t accept my own color photos, every time I took a picture it was always felt “wrong” or “these colors are fake”.

That’s why in 2018 I chose to take pictures in black and white because at that time “color photos” felt very complicated for me.
But now that 2023 almost over, I’m trying to revise my previous photos that I left unedited in color. And now I’m trying to take photos in color again besides in black and white because I feel that black and white has become my escape since I can’t accept the complexity of photography in color.
And now I’m trying to feel the complexity that this city has to offer and preserving it through my photos in color.

This digital zine project is a form of realizing what has become my dream in pursuing street photography —“to convey the message or story through our photos”.
And I also see this project as self-reflection of how I percive the street from my perspective and how I’ve progressed since I started in 2018 until now.
